CatView 2000               W9x/2k/XP           FREE
 http://california.tucows.com/files6/cv2kv108.exe
 http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/spurry/catview/catview.html
"Although it is possible to search a file with the Find feature in
a word processor or Web browser, this will not cater to finding
groups of words or returning a list of matching lines. Only one
line of text can be searched for when using a Find dialog, so even
if you can use wildcards, you still have to get the word order
right. If there are many matches, you will have to iterate through
all the matches in the document until you locate the one you're
looking for. If it is a large file, this can be very tedious. With
CatView, you search a file by typing text in up to 3 keywords (in
separate text-boxes). For example, to return a list of lines that
contain cases with a 250 watt power supply, you might type [sample
text] into the Keyword boxes in CatView."

TreeSize                 Win9x/NT/2000/XP              FREE (mailware)
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Reviews/r417.html
No matter how large is your hard drive, there will come the moment
when there will be no available space for new software and files.
To find out where the space has gone to, you can browse the disk
and discover hidden 'treasures', such as long-forgotten MP3 archives,
manually or use TreeSize. TreeSize is a smart program that scans your
logical drives (including removable media) and tells you the location of
huge files or large folders. The program's features can be accessed
through the context menu that is available in any folder or file on the
system as well as the standard method - running the program from the
Start menu shortcuts.  The tool lets you scan files and present the results
in an easy-to-understand form. You can generate reports and print out
information on how much space is wasted by the system. One of the most
interesting features is the ability to assess how much space a certain folder
would take up on a CD. Try this tool today and clean up your hard drive!

server-side solution. Plus, you get to store and use your personal
word list across all your forms, instead of maintaining separate
ones on each application. The program installs as a new button in
the IE toolbar (as well as a new menu item under Tools). After
filling out a form, just hit the ieSpell button and it pops up a
dialog, similar to the MS Word spell check."

Windows Update could be less of a pain
(Gee Mitch,  a MS proggie that is troublesome...who woulda thunk...)
What we're going to do is set the transfer dialog to "debug" mode.
So we can keep an eye on each stage in the process.
In Registry editor go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \

"SteppingMode" (sans quotes). Give the String a value of Y.
Next timeWindows Update should be more descriptive.
If you want to disable , simply switch this value to N.
Another way to get the downloads is using the
Corporate version of Windows Update.

I'll throw this one in for Bob Young and any other 'radioheads' out there.
"DXLab is a suite of interoperating applications designed to
automate DXing activities. Each application can be independently
installed and utilized; when multiple applications are running,
they sense each other's presence and interoperate appropriately.
All DXLab applications are free, and contain no advertising; they
run on Windows 95, 98, 98SE, NT, 2000, and XP. Commercial use is
expressly forbidden. DXView: displays DXCC info and country maps;
plots QSOs, spots, beam headings, solar position, and the solar
terminator in real time on a world map. Pathfinder: locates QSL
information from web-accessible sources. Commander: controls and
communicates with Icom, TenTec, Kenwood, and Yaesu radios;
displays frequency-dependent settings for amplifiers and tuners.
WinWarbler: conducts RTTY QSOs, with dual-channel diversity decode
when an external RTTY modem is available."

Parallel Port Customizer               W9x/2k/XP           FREE
 http://dl.winsite.com/win95/miscutil/ppc20.zip
 http://www.obock.de/html/ppc.html
"I coded Parallel Port Customizer for a friend who wanted to
control an external electronic device using his PC. He told me
that it would be nice to use the single pins of the parallel port
to turn on / off those tiny devices like transistors and stuff
like that. Cause he didn't find any tool solving his problem I
offered him to code one for him. So, if you are interested in
electronics this should be a nice testing tool for you! You may
think "This GUI application isn't really supposed to be used in
automated environments". Because of this Parallel Port Customizer
comes with a small dynamic link library (DLL). With this DLL all
you coders out there can implement the complete functionality of
PPC in your own applications! With this tool and the DLL you get a
complete suite to build and test software with interfaces that can
control nearly everything - use your imagination."

  yEnc32                    W9x/2k/XP             FREE
 http://california.tucows.com/files3/yenc32-003.exe
 http://www.yenc32.com/
"yEnc32 is a Win32 implementation of the yEnc binary encoding
system, which is primarily used in Usenet newsgroup posts. It
supports basic file yEncoding / yDecoding, with a friendly, easy-
to-use interface. The yEnc format itself is an excellent
alternative to UUencode and Base64. yEncoded messages are up to
40% smaller than UUencoded / Base64 equivalents, and include
built-in CRC error checking and multipart file support. The demand
for the sample apps was overwhelming, so we decided to create a
'proper' yEncoder for the general public. yEnc32 is the result. We
now have a yEnc32 tutorial for Outlook Express Users."

File Investigator                FREE
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Reviews/r419.html
Computer viruses get more and more intelligent every day, trying to sneak
into your system under the disguise of innocent image files.  Another
problem may arise when you have a file without extension, or you can't
open it with the program it is supposed to be run with.  To find out what
those files are really are you can use File Investigator.  File Investigator is
a tool that identifies a file by its content rather than its name.  This program
recognizes more than three hundred different file types and lists all available
information about a specified file.  The program can be accessed both from
the command line with parameters (path to file) and the context menu.

RColours                           W9x/2k/XP                           FREE

"RColours is a program for Electronics hobbyists. It will convert
a given value into the colour bands that are used to represent
that value - or it will display the value represented by the given
colour bands. Installation is simply a matter of expanding the ZIP
file into a directory of your choice. A help file is included.
This program has been written using Microsoft Visual Basic version
3.0, so it will run under all versions of Windows. If you do not
already have the file 'VBRun300.DLL' on your machine (probably in
the 'Windows \ System' directory), then you will need to obtain a
copy from this page. RColours is Freeware so no registration is
required. If you wish to suggest improvements or report any
problems, I will be pleased to hear from you."

Binary Calculator                 W9x/2k/XP                FREE
 http://www.jintek.com/demo/WinCalc.zip
 http://www.jintek.com/binary.html
"Binary Calculator is a simple RPN-style calculator designed for
programmers. It lets you manipulate numbers in a variety of
formats and do binary operations on them that few other
calculators allow. With BinCalc, you can directly turn bits on and
off just by clicking them. HP Calculators use a four-element
stack. The stack is made up of X, Y, Z, and T values. The X value
is the main working value. Certain operations (shift left / right,
increment / decrement, not, and clear) work only on the X value.
When you press Enter the stack is rolled up and the X value is
recopied into the X element. Swap switches the values of the X and
Y elements. Whichever edit field is active controls the numeric
format of the stack. There are six fields where you can enter
digits or characters: INT, UINT, Hex, Octal, Double, and Chars.
Except for double all of them are 32-bit values. All of the
buttons can be operated from keyboard shortcuts. The standard math
operations are easy to perform from the numeric keypad."

Partial Workaround For WinXP Product Activation
A way to foil Windows Product Activation (WPA), but rather is a
way that users of XP software can avoid having to reactivate
the software after a full install:
The trick is to copy and re-use the c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl file.
It's small--- mine is just 13K long--- so it will easily fit on a
floppy. Or, you can copy it to another safe location on your hard drive.
Once that's done, go about your reinstallation task normally.
After you've reinstalled XP, either boot to a DOS floppy or start in
XP's Safe Mode/Command Prompt (i.e. hit the F8 key when your system
"beeps" during the boot process). Then copy your original wpa.dbl from
its safe location back into the c:\windows\system32 folder, and then
reboot.
Because nothing on your system has changed--- it's the same BIOS, CPU,
RAM, etc., and because you're installing the same copy of XP that was
previously installed, the "old" WPA key should be accepted as valid,
saving you the hassle of re-Activating the software.
Note: This won't work if you try moving the file to a different machine,
but  this may save you from having to re-Activate the new installation.

{New options in My Computer} If you're running on Windows XP, this
program will change your registry, adding a few more options to
the My Computer context menu. Now you can drop into DOS, log off,
restart, shutdown, and do all sorts of stuff right from your
desktop. Now, that's what I call convenience. You can even
(easily) edit the registry from this new and improved context
menu! As I've stated many times before, however, you shouldn't
mess with the registry unless you know what you're doing. Your
computer might not like you if you render it useless. It's just a
simple REG file that someone has put together. No need for any
extra software! Now, another one (for Windows ME) is available
from the site.

"Sharemon is a freeware windows share monitor for Windows. It can
be used to log user access on a windows server or just to monitor
the current connections. It cannot be used on Windows 9x/Me
because the network API used isn't available on that platform. No
9x/Me version is planned (yet). Welcome to my personal programming
projects page! My name is Björn Harrtell and I study Computer
Engineering at Mid Sweden University. I'm currently involved in
developing win32 applications. I do all my coding in C++ *without*
the MFC classes. Feel free to contact me if you need to know
anything about my work published here. Bug reports and other
constructive criticism are highly appreciated."

Clear Microsoft's Windows Media Player History in XP
Download of the free "Bonus Pack" from WINDOWSMEDIA.COM
This tool will clear the MRU list quickly, but here's a way to do it
without software:
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \
Software \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Player \ RecentFileList - and
export this "Selected branch" to a REG file. Edit that REG
file in your favorite text editor, insert a minus sign between the
opening bracket and the "H" in "HKEY." This will
remove the branch (and all subkeys) whenever the REG file is
"merged." Make a shortcut to it, add the "/S" switch to the
Target field to "silence" the task, then place it in your Startup
folder to clear "the list" every time you boot into Windows.
Another key which may hold an MRU: HKEY_USERS \ .Default \
Software \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Player \ RecentFileList.
NOTE: DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON.... Messing with the
Registry is NOT for the faint of heart nor the slow of wit.
You could torch your system in one bad move.
