Just in time for Microsoft's latest big day

most popular-and profitable-
"productivity" suite, Microsoft Office.
OpenOffice includes Excel-like (spreadsheet)
and Word (word-processing)
programs, though as yet no e-mail client.
Produced by a small army of "open
source" programming enthusiasts, it's been
getting respectful reviews for
ease of use and for faithfulness to the original
software's functionality
(if that's the right word). It's also perfectly
legal--Microsoft's code was
reverse engineered, not stolen. And the price--free,
for the unsupported
version, versus $400 plus for the original--is
certainly right. Download a

Hard Drive Repair Options
The most common hardware problems are a bad
controller, a bad
drive motor, or a bad head mechanism.
Can the BIOS see and identify the hard drive
correctly? If
it can't, then the hard drives onboard controller
is bad.
If the drive spins, try booting to the A> prompt,
run Fdisk
and check to see if Fdisk can see a partition
on the hard
drive. If Fdisk can see the partition, that
means that it can
access the drive and that the controller electronics
are
functioning correctly. If there is no head
clatter, it may be
just a matter of disk corruption which commonly
occurs when a
surge hits you machine and overwhelms the
power supply voltage
regulator. It commonly over whelms the system
electronics
allowing an EM pulse to wipe out the master
boot record, file
allocations table, and primary directory.
Fdisk can fix the
master boot record and Norton Disk Doctor
can restore the FAT
and Directory from the secondaries.
The drive spins but Fdisk can't see it. Try the drive
in
another system and repeat the test to confirm
that Fdisk can't
read through the drives onboard controller.
If it sees it in
another system, then your machines hard drive
interface is
bad. You can try an upgraded or replacement
controller card
like a Promise or CMD Technologies (there
are others) in you
machine after disabling the integrated controller
in the BIOS,
but if the integrated controller went south,
it may just be
symptomatic of further failures and you'd
be wise to replace
the motherboard. Trying the drive in another
machine also
eliminates the variable that your machines
12 volt power
output being bad
The drive doesn't spin. Either the onboard
controller is
bad or the motor is bad (assuming you did
try the drive in
another machine). It's time to hit the net
and local
independent shops to see if you can locate
another drive of
the same make and model that's good. Since
the drive is
probably an older drive and no longer in distribution,
your
best bet is to find an identical used drive.
If you know
someone with the same make and model, you
might be wise to try
and persuade them to sell you their drive
with an offer of
providing them with a free upgraded drive.
If you can locate
an identical drive, start with the controller
replacement ...
this is the simplest and least invasive. If
swapping the
controller doesn't produce the desire result,
you can tear
into the drive and swap the motors. While
you have both drive
opened up to accomplish this, scrutinize the
platters, heads
and armatures. You might even hook the drive
up and power it
from a system with both drives attached. This
way, you could
see anything that deviates between the actions
of both drives
when they are initialized. Swapping patters
is unlikely to
produce any positive result.
Take the hard drive out of the computer,
place it a zip lock bag. Put it in the freezer
and let it
freeze. The purpose of the bag is to minimize
frost and
sweating of the drives electronics. Take it
out and while
still cold, plug it in, and fire it up. Sometimes,
as long as
the drive can stay cold, the fading component
will operate
within tolerance, and the drive will work.
As fast as you
can get what you need off the failing drive.
Try switching the HDD to SLAVE with the jumpers
(assuming
it is an IDE) and on the flat cable. Install
a working HDD as
the MASTER. Boot from either the new HDD or
a floppy Emergency
Boot Disk. Now see if you can access the old
HDD. Copy your
data or the entire HDD to the new one if there
is capacity.
Turn the PCs upsidedown for a day or so, and
if
needed we twisted the PC back and forth upsidedown
as it
started up. This always seemed to work to
get the HD to
engage.
Turn off the PC, lift it 12 inches above the
desk, then drop
it. Sorts out most hard drive problems.

Every single 98SE file there is!!!
Microsoft's Web site discloses the complete
listing of all of the Windows 98 SE files. Head over to their
Support Center and search for "Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM
Directory Listing." I copied these links into a new Word document.
Whenever I wonder whether or not a file shipped with Windows, I
open this document containing the list of every file name and
press CTRL+F to search it. Consequently, I wasn't one of those who
was tricked into deleting SULFNBK or JDBDMGR. Alternatively, if I
should ever need to replace a copy of a damaged Windows file, this
list could be searched to identify which CAB file from which to
extract the replacement file. A third use for this tool might be
to confirm the byte size of a Windows file if virus alteration is
suspected."
Win 98
Reported Memory Does Not Match Amount of Installed Memory
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q146912
"When you view the Performance tab in System properties, the
amount of memory reported may differ from the actual amount of
memory installed in the computer. This behavior can occur for any
of the following reasons: Himem.sys is not using all the memory on
an EISA computer. A driver or program loading from the Config.sys
or Autoexec.bat file is claiming a portion of random access memory
(RAM). A virtual device driver loading from the System.ini file is
claiming a portion of RAM. A protected-mode driver is causing the
memory mismatch. The registry is damaged. A CMOS setting is
disabling some of the RAM. You have the 'maxphyspage=' setting in
your System.ini file set to restrict Windows from using some of
the installed memory. Ramdrive.sys is being loaded in the
Config.sys file. You are using a video adapter that is integrated
into the motherboard."

"When you and one or more trusted colleagues have Privaria
installed on your computers, a couple of mouse clicks is all you
need to request remote access to each other's computer desktops,
exchange files, open a shared whiteboard for collaborative text
editing and drawing, or start a videoconference. There's no need
to fuss around with IP addresses or arcane encryption tools, sign
up with some third-party connection management service, or beg
your network administrator to allow incoming connections through
your firewall. You simply establish a standard FTP account with
any server you choose, give all the computers in your trusted
network access to that account, and authorize connections with
those computers by accepting their unique authentication keys on
your own machine. Then it manages your secure peer-to-peer
network behind the scenes, tunneling authorized connections

The Converter's Paradise (convert
file types)
http://hem.spray.se/joakim.slettengren/
"This site was built to provide you with different converter
tools. If you want to get a converter not listed or just want to
ask questions about converting things, use my message board to
tell other people of your problems. All files are
Shareware or Freeware and I have virus checked them all with AVP
(Anti-Viral Toolkit Pro). Press CTRL+F if you want to find a
specific converter and then type one of the formats you want to
convert to / from." It's quite a comprehensive list, although most
of these utilities seem to work only on the command prompt. For
instance: "Bigtext turns ordinary text files into self-contained,
self-displaying executable files. This program is specifically
designed to make self-displaying books, manuals, documents, and
catalogues."
BootPart
W2k/XP
FREE
http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm
"BOOTPART lets you add partitions in the Windows NT/2K/XP boot
menu. Usually, you only have an MSDOS or Windows 95 entry and one
(or several) entries on the Windows NT multiboot. With BOOTPART,
you can add any partition on the menu. You can add OS/2 Multiboot,
or Linux Partition (with Lilo) in the menu. The only thing I
highly suggest: your active partition on your first hard disk must
be a FAT16 primary partition. This can be a small partition. It
seems it's actually impossible add an HPFS partition with OS/2
boot. If you find a workaround, please let me know. BOOTPART
creates a 512 bytes file which contains an image of a boot sector
that loads the boot sector of the partition. After, this file is
declared in BOOT.INI (a text file used by Windows NT boot menu).
The boot sector comes from FDFormat and WinImage. The version 2.20
has now very cool feature: repair Windows NT loader boot sector on
Fat partition (but Bootpart cannot repair under Windows
NT/2K/XP)."
Where Word 2000 Settings Are Stored in the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q212242
"Most settings in Word are stored in the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 9.0 \ Word.
Changes made to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry key are mirrored in
the same HKEY_USERS registry key location. The difference between
the two locations is that the first one applies only to the
current user of the system, and the other is the default for all
users. Word entries are the same for both, however, so any change
made to one is automatically reflected in the other. The settings
that you may need to examine during troubleshooting are located in
this key. The Data key and the Options key are the most frequently
changed areas. \Data: contains binary information for most
recently used (MRU) lists, including the MRU file list and the MRU
address book list. It also contains other information such as
Track Changes settings and Edit settings. \Options: stores those
options that you can set from Word, either by changing menu
options or by running the RegOptions macro. These are the editable
options." etc.

How to Use Wfetch.exe to Troubleshoot HTTP Connections
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q284285
"When you are troubleshooting connectivity issues between IIS and
Web clients, you may need to view data that is not displayed in
the Web browser, such as the HTTP headers that are included in the
Request and Response packets. WebFetch (Wfetch.exe) 1.2 is a free
utility provided on an 'as-is' basis. It is not supported by
Microsoft, but can be used to provide detailed information about
the traffic between the client and server. This utility provides
advanced features that can allow a user to expose their server to
potential security risks. For this reason, Microsoft recommends
the utility be used only in testing, and not in a production
environment. See the 'Security Ramifications' paragraph for more
information. WebFetch does not log the TCP handshake data that is
used to establish and close TCP sessions. To troubleshoot
connectivity issues (including TCP session data), a utility such
as Network Monitor, which captures network packets, should be
used."
XP, 2000, and/or IE only
Use Netscape email and bookmarks and you'll never wanna go back to
IE
Yes
OK, Stop the pain of IE-OE (It even sounds like pain!)
'Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
\WINDOWS \SYSTEM32 \CONFIG \SYSTEM.'
(You must have the recovery console as a boot option),The
listed file can appear
completely normal. The problem is so common it already has a
MSKB article (Q307545).
Sometimes, one of 5 Registry files gets
corrupted for an unknown reason - rendering your machine basically
useless. The article contains a complete workaround which gets you
back to your most recent System Restore point. It's cumbersome,
but I was able to get back up and running."
Better print this one up if you're an XP beta tester!

Windows XP may stop responding at shut down
The following message is displayed: 'Saving your settings.'
When this occurs, you may be able to move the mouse pointer, but
when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing happens. This issue may occur
only occasionally. It is a known bug in XP. Don't go to MSKB
Q307274 for answers - you'll get the royal runaround. Found this
at AUMHA.ORG, inside a comprehensive discussion of shutdown and
restart problems: "As a workaround, try dismantling the Windows XP
logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts,
then click 'Change the way users log on or off.' Uncheck the box
that says 'Use the Welcome screen.' This removes the initial logon
screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up
the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user
name and password." Microsoft does not share this information
with users because that would spoil the XPerience."
Reinstalling Win XP wipes out the documents folder and erased
pictures.
1. Make your own my documents file. Say "documents
main".
Then put in it all the files that Windows
XP would
erase. Music ,pictures etc. Then use Windows
Power Toys
to change the default folders path from my
documents to \my
documents main\my pictures etc. Now your pictures,
music,
templates, backups etc is safe incase of a
re-install. Save
all your data files like Microsoft Money,
Outlook backups,
etc., into this file. Back up the My Documents
Main regularly.
2. Make a smaller (10 GB) FAT32 partition on
your hard drive
(I named it C ) for your Windows XP installation.
Install
windows into that fat 32 installation. Make
the rest of the
drive (say 'E' ) into NTFS.
Some of the early images of Windows XP
sold by Microsoft
make the system restore not work according
to some. MS
should send you a free new XP disk and serial number
because of this.
Mmicons 2002 http://www.mmicons.com/
