Hi Boys and Girls!

One of my favorite things about the PC and the internet is the huge amount of free programs to fit almost any need. But a growing trend that is rather disturbing is the planting of hidden "SPY" programs inside the Free/ShareWare. Have any of these wonderful FREE programs planted something in your PC? Are you sure??? Well here are some nice places to go to help find out about most any FreeWare or ShareWare.  They will let you know if any of it was SpyWare!

Excellent Anti-Spyware Resources

It is a good idea to check and see if a certain freebie downloads contains spyware before ever downloading it in the first place.

Some good resources are:

Here is a short tutorial to compliment the recent PowerPoint presentation the club had:

******************************************

SPECIAL FEATURE:

Import Your Power Point Presentation to the Web

 PowerPoint 2000
To import your Power Point Presentation into your FrontPage web site:

1- Open your presentation using PowerPoint
 2- Select File/Save asWeb Page

Power Point will create a folder in the same location using the same name of your
presentation that contains the files necessary for importing the
presentation into you web. Let's say that your presentation is named
"Statistics.ppt", then your folder for importing will be named "Statistics_files"

Now that you have created the folder with the files that you need for importing
your presentation into your web, you are ready now to import this folder
into your FrontPage web

1- Open your web in FrontPage
 2- Select File/IMPORT
3- Click the ADD FOLDER button in the Import dialog box
4- Browse to the location where you save the Presentation Folder
5- Highlight the folder and click the OPEN button
6- Click the OK button in the IMPORT dialog box
7- Import process will start now

If your presentation is big, be patient it might take some time.

Now you have the folder and files of your presentation imported into your
FrontPage web. You need now to create a hyperlink to the presentation to
be viewed by your site visitors:

1- Open the page in your web site where you want to have the link to view
    your online presentation.
2- Place your cursor on the page where you want your hyperlink to appear.
3- In the folder list click the plus sign next to your presentation folder
    to expand it.
4- drag either the "frame.htm" or "fullscreen.htm" file on your open page.

The "frame.htm" creates a frameset page with thumbnail versions of your slides
in the left pane and the current slide in the main, right pane. Clicking
the thumbnail slides on the left will open that slide into the right or main
pane.
The "fullscreen.htm" creates a fullscreen page for your presentation.
To view the next slide the viewer can either click on the slide or let the
presentation advance the slides automatically.

 Once you have your
hyperlink on the page select SAVE from the FILE menu. You may now switch
to preview mode and preview your presentation by clicking the hyperlink you
just created on the page.

To change the text of the hyperlink you created:

1- Highlight the text you have as the hyperlink
2- Right click and select HYPERLINK from the right click menu
3- In the hyperlink dialog box, at the top of the screen you will
see an input box next to "Text to display"
4- Type in the text you wish to use as the hyperlink
 Save your page

 PowerPoint XP
 01- File/Save As
 02- Publish
 03- Select your options
 04- Select Destination
 05- Publish
 06- Open Frontpage
07- File/Import click Add Folder, then go to where you saved the folder
 08- Open
 09- OK to start Importing
10- File/Import click Add File, then go to where you save the folder
11- In the same location you will see an "htm" page
12- This page has the same name of your presentaion
 13- Selected
 15- Open
 16- OK to start Importing
16- Drag the "htm" page that you imported to your web page
where you want to make it appear.
17- Change the link text as you like

REMEMBER: when you want to publish the prsentation, make sure to click
and select the "Animation" option while browsing.

Virus Alert

Bugbear A new email/web worm appeared last week.
The worm tries to disable any software firewalls or anti-virus apps you have running, copies itself onto your system using random and variable file names, and much more. According to the folks at Symantec, the worm can:
Delete files.
Terminate processes.
List processes and deliver the list to the hacker.
Copy files.
Start processes.
List files and deliver the list to the hacker.
Deliver intercepted keystrokes to the hacker (in an encrypted form). This may release
confidential information that typed on a computer (passwords, login details, and so on).
Deliver the system information to the hacker in the following form:
    User: <user name>
    Processor: <type of processor used>
Windows version: <Windows version, build number>
    Memory information: <Memory available, etc.>
    Local drives, their types (e.g., fixed/removable/RAM disk/CD-
    ROM/remote), and their physical characteristics
List network resources and their types, and deliver the list to the hacker.

Lastly,

I could still use volunteers to download the programs listed in the "Corner" for the club. We would like to put them all onto CD's for the members. Let me know if you can help. If you have been doing it, PLEASE let me know your progress!

Slap -   (I'll let the author (BarnseyBoy - code monkey) speak for himself)         FREE
If your like me you run firewall software that tells you when someone tries to access your system.
Sometimes I respond with a few packets of my own just to let them know that I am paying attention.
I wrote Slap to make responding to these access attempts easier and more entertaining.
Just enter the IP address of the person you wish to slap and click on the Slap button.
The program will attempt to access all the ports in the list and send them a packet with a personal message.  (The default message is 'Leave Me Alone!') Slap integrates with Black Ice and Zone Alarm and can use information received from these software firewalls to "Auto Slap" intruders and add their attacks to your list of responses. --Here is a cool Wav file to use with this.

DrvClonerXP W2k/XP FREE
 http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105299
DrvClonerXP copies an entire drive partition sector-by-sector, byte-for-byte directly to another
drive partition, producing an exact reproduction (clone) of your original partition. No intermediate file
is created in the process. Unlike a disk imaging tool, it does not save the image to disk (for backup or other
purpose) but applies it directly to the selected partition. Use it, if you want to create a clone of your drive for
whatever reason, (new hard drive etc.)

Vitrite                        W9x/2k/XP       FREE
http://home.insightbb.com/~ryanvm/tinyutilities/vitrite/
One of the major GUI toys that I love about the Macintosh is the transparency feature. If you're not familiar with the concept, then just imagine if you could see through an open window to a window behind it or even to the Desktop. Vitrite brings this cool feature to the PC. The cooler thing about Vitrite compared to the Mac, though, is that you control the transparency of each individual window with a series of shortcuts. The Mac only makes your unused windows a "little" transparent. Vitrite lets you control which windows are transparent and to what degree at any given time. Vitrite also lets you toggle a window's "always on top" flag by pressing a simple keyboard combination. This application is also available under the GNU General Public License, meaning that you have access to the source code if you want to see what makes it tick. While it is extremely cool to be able to have transparent windows, I will warn you that the video refresh slows down a bit while scrolling if you have any transparent windows open.  ClearInfo W2k/XP FREE http://dev.iwdstudio.com/index.htm
{Monitor your system} ClearInfo allows you to monitor system uptime, physical/virtual  memory usage, CPU usage, type of connection, whose logged in, display size and  refresh rate, see the CPU name, memory load, and what song, if any, is playing. All this info can also be directed to a log file too. ClearInfo runs in transparent mode and  you control the degree. The great thing about it is that it's very configurable. If you don't want to monitor one of the above system properties then just uncheck the box.

HTTP File Grabber                     W9x/W2k/XP                       FREE
 http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105240
HTTP File Grabber allows you to grab virtually any file from the web and save it to your hard drive. This is useful if you need to download a file that your web browser may not handle  correctly for some reason. The program supports password protected sites (authorization),  connections via proxy server, and also allows you to set the referrer information, query string, and more.

 iFind                                   W9x/W2k/XP                                     FREE
 http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105188
iFind is a web search tool that allows you to query the major search engines and  produces the results in a unique way, and further categorizes the found pages into  logical results with an assigned ranking score. The philosophy behind the product is quite sophisticated, in theory; however, the program itself only offers a rather simplistic interface (which could use some major improvement). The results that are returned are fast, accurate, and relevant to your search term. Give it a try - you'll either love it or hate it. It’s free (for personal use only)!

PDFproducer            W9x/W2k/XP               FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105111
Winsonar is a simple process monitor that allows you to monitor which applications  and background processes are currently running on your system. It detects new processes that install into memory while the system is working. The program divides the running processes into “safe” and “suspects,” allowing you to further investigate the new addition of processes. Winsonar has pretty basic functionality,  and will be of most benefit to advanced users.

Looking for a less buggy replacement for Microsoft IE? Then you should take a look at Mozilla. But before you do that, maybe you'd like to read a little bit about what some people who use Mozilla think about it. Mozfan.info is a Web site devoted to Mozilla. This is a great place to find news about Mozilla, and make friends with people who love the Web browser. Mozfan.info is structured well; look up archived stories and surveys. Submit news yourself, or post a review for other readers. Hopefully the downloads section will start to fill up soon, but if not, I am sure I can make do with the information I get from the MozFan Forums. This Web site is new, but it may become the number one place on the Internet to get inside information on Mozilla.

"Some of my clients had intermittent connectivity problems with their ISP. \ The support guys kept coming out but never found a problem. (Funny how it always worked when they were there.) I wrote this program to create detailed logs of the connectivity problems. Their attitude changed as soon as I sent them the log."

LockFile - This simple program can be used to ->predictably<- corrupt and then repair a file. I use this to add an additional layer of security to password protected zip files and other types of encrypted files. I think its a good idea to use multiple types of protection where possible. Warning: If you corrupt a file more than once you can't fix it. Also if you try to repair a file that wasn't corrupted in the first place, you just messed it up.

Sustain - I had problems with a system service self terminating at random. I wrote this program to monitor and restart it when it died. Through command line parameters you can have it check for any program at any interval and run any program when not found. (Did that make sense?)

Windows Memory Info W9x FREE
 http://www.angelfire.com/va3/winmem/
"Windows Memory Info (WMI) is a program for monitoring your computer's CPU and memory usage.
WMI's MemFree feature enables free more memory for your applications, either manually or
automatically. The setup program lets you customize WMI for your convenience.
Other features include configurable sensors, log file
support, warning sounds, Windows shut down/restart, and Windows
tray support." WMI looks to be a very nice program.
The status indicators are color-coded with green, yellow and red,
much like a traffic light. If you are in the green then you are
good to keep going, if you are in the yellow then you need to use
caution and if you are in the red, you better stop. I wish this
program was around 3 years ago!

ClipLinkViewer W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.shopperturnpike.com/usefulsoftware/
{Play video files} Like many of you out there, I used to surf the
Internet without broadband. I was stuck with a 56k connection,
spending hours to download video. It used to be that when you
wanted to check out a movie file, it was split up into multiple
pieces so they were easier to download - but a pain to play back,
because you had to go click on the next file to continue.
ClipLinkViewer is an application that will play, in succession,
all the AVI, MOV, DV, MPG, and MP4 video clips within a selected
folder/directory. This is great for presentation machines that
need to cycle through the video clips of a directory to entertain
the audience before the actual presentation. The only major
requirement of this application is that you need to have QuickTime
version 5 or later installed on your computer. [BS]

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105381
DownloadWunder is a tool designed for mass downloading of images
that have sequential file names with a common prefix, suffix, or
incremental numbers. The program will scan the page and queue all
the images that match the pattern, and you can then choose to
download them or to generate a list of the files that can be used
with other download tools. DownloadWunder can be used with any
other file type as well (MP3, ZIP, EXE, etc.) and also supports
command line arguments.

DELL LAPTOP PROBLEM>>>
One trick that always seems to help intermittent and odd problems with
Dells is the case screws on the underside of the laptop. Go to the
one on the center of the base, tighten it (careful not to strip
the head, you know...!) Then continue to tighten them in a
circular pattern radiating out from the center. (The pattern is
only important to make sure you don't miss any.) Continue until
they are all tight. The reason this works is that the case is used
as the return path for signal lines and traces for the electrical
'earth ground'. If one or more of these paths for electrons are
not continuos, the subsystem using the case shell for a path is
interrupted and the video or the floppy or whatever is either
intermittent or fails completely. Good luck, I hope this helps.
It's a poor engineering practice, but it is cheaper than doing it
right.

CSS Code Assembler W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://bis.midco.net/jwacintro/ns/index2.html
{Create CSS} I love cascading style sheets, because they make your
HTML code so much cleaner. It's great to be able to make all of
your Web pages have the same fonts and background without having
to code that design a dozen times. Some people have even used
cascading style sheets (CSS) as a way to "skin" their site (but
that topic is better suited for the Webmaster Weekly). CSS Code
Assembler is a great way to speed up the style sheet creation
process by giving you all of your choices in a drop-down menu. Now
you can make your style sheet by just choosing the options you
want, which is great if you are like me and can't remember all the
options you might have to code. When you’re done, you can test the
code and if it passes, you can copy the code into your current
style sheet. CSS Code Assembler even has a pull-down menu to
direct you to different tools and resources, such as a Web-safe
color picker. If you are new to CSS and want to learn, then this
is a great application to "cut your teeth on." Best of all, you
can download the CSS Code Assembler to run from your computer or
just run it from the Web site, as it is HTML- and Java-based. [BS]

  E-Mage for Web                W9x/W2k/XP                FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105172

E-Mage for Web is a simple utility for creating HTML image
galleries from pictures on your computer. It automatically
generates pages with thumbnail images that are hyperlinked to the
original, larger image. You can customize several parameters such
as thumbnail dimensions, compression quality, border color and
thickness and more. The program comes with several templates to
choose from and you can edit them to fit your needs or create
completely new templates, using regular HTML documents that match
your site design. Even though this program may not appear overly
feature packed at first, the high level of customization and ease
of use make it a good choice for experienced webmasters.
Public Lettering
 http://www.publiclettering.org.uk/
On publiclettering.org.uk you can view pictures and the backgrounds
of the lettering of some stunning buildings. Some of the buildings
even have a 3D view. This web site is great if you love pretty
pictures and is a great way to open your eyes to what may be in
your area. One of my favorites on this web site is the British
Library.

SmallBluePrinter FREE
 http://www.smallblueprinter.com/
Quickly and painlessly setup the walls of my house and add
windows and doors where needed. What's cool about this web site is
that you can also do a 3D walkthrough of your creation or even view
it isometrically (meaning that you can view it in 3D from an
overhead angle). And you can print out your blue print.

PrnPrint W9x/2k/XP FREE
 http://www.magmacom.com/~russrite/software/PrnPrint/
Print to file is perfect for being able to reproduce an exact print
out time and time again, you just need to know how to print the PRN
file, which is where PrnPrint enters the picture. With PrnPrint you
can print captured "Print to file" files (*.prn), text files
(*.txt) and postscript files (*.ps). You can even select an option
in the application that will add a link in your Send To menu that
points to PrnPrint. One way you can configure your system is that
when you right-click and "Send To" PrnPrint, it will wait in a
dropped files tab until you tell it to print. Another option is to
set PrnPrint to automatically print anything in the dropped files
tab. Print out "read me" files without opening them first.

ProxySwitcher Lite W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.velns.org/
{Change proxy settings} Some businesses only connect to the Internet
through a Proxy Server. Basically, that server surfs the Internet
for you and sends you back the information, providing greater security.
So you try to connect thru some other places proxy server but you can't
connect to the Internet because your proxy is set to your companies
server. With this application you can configure your company's Server
along with other companies' Proxy Servers and then you just have to
right-click an icon in the systray to select the appropriate
server. ProxySwitcher Lite even has a profile for "Direct
Connection" which is perfect if you use the laptop from home on
your home Internet connection.

Postcast Server             W9x/2k/XP                       FREE
http://www.postcastserver.com/

Postcast Server isn't professional mailing list software, but it
is the other half of the equation: an SMTP server. It won't
maintain your distribution lists, but it will help you send out
your newsletter or e-mailings without making your ISP mad
(although we do recommend contacting your ISP before sending out
any large volume of mail). With Postcast Server you can send 20 e-
mails simultaneously, and it can send out 3,500 messages per hour
over a modem connection (and that number increases with increased
bandwidth). For all of you concerned with privacy, Postcast Server
can replace your ISP's SMTP server on your network, meaning that
you only have to answer to yourself in terms of privacy on your
outgoing e-mails. Postcast Server can also help you keep track of
bad e-mail addresses, as it builds a database of bounced-back
messages.

Virtual-mem settings for XP and 2000
Improve Windows' Virtual Memory Settings?
All versions of Windows, including XP,let you adjust the "virtual
memory" or "page file" or "swapfile" space:
Actually, XP and Windows 2000 both will suggest a reasonable
"recommended" size for their virtual memory settings, and also tell
you the minimum and maximum allowable sizes. In XP, right click "my
computer," then select properties/advanced/performance
settings/advanced/change (virtual memory).
See also item #7 "Improve XP's Virtual Memory Settings "
