SPECIALFEATURE:

HELPING THE HELPERS

Unfortunately there is no solid reliability in computing.  There are just too many
millions of  bytes, bits, circuits, and chips.  If  the only car you ever owned was
a Yugo you would yearn for a computer that trustworthy.

And since few of us have idiotic imagery (photographic memories), we tend to
'misplace' the info we need to address the problems that regularly spring up
as we deal with these computers.  So we ask others for help.
OK that's good..."the only stupid question is the one not asked".

However, since the helper can't witness the problem, and he is usually not that familiar
with the specifics of your personal box of electronic aggravation, it is a good idea
for you to have some helper applications to get him all the info he needs.

Two well know apps are Belarc Advisor and SiSoft Sandra.
I used Belarc Advisor for many years as it's great for finding installed software.
SiSoft Sandra (free edition) is many folks choice for hardware analysis.
Now my choice is Aida32. It gives you great information about installed memory
as well as very extensive data about the rest of your system.  I find it much more
convenient to use than Sandra and more informative about hardware than Belarc Advisor.
It's a 1.5MB Zip file FREE at http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

Go get this application, go through all its parts and start to learn what makes that box tick!

Please remember:    Pray for our troops.

LS Quiz                               W9x/2k/XP                      FREE
http://www.luziusschneider.com/QuizHome.htm
{Create quizzes} you can build and run quizzes, add a time limit,
assign multiple correct answers, and skip questions. True, I lose the
benefit of writing the information down and remembering it, but on
the other hand, I can continuously quiz myself until I understand
the material. Back in the days of the Apple ][+, I learned the
state capitals and other geography tidbits through a software quiz
program. Besides, my hand hurts after writing just two sentences
these days, as I've become too reliant on the keyboard for most of
the writing work. There are sample tests included to help you get
started and you can print the quiz files. This program has an
English and German interface and it's easy to switch between the
two. More languages are supported.

WorldTV                           W9x/2k/XP                         FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106028
WorldTV allows you to view Internet-enabled TV stations around the
globe. You can select from a list by country and view the live
stream using Windows Media Player. You can maintain a list of
favorite stations and also add your own. In addition to viewing
the live stream, you can also choose to record the broadcast and
even use the built-in timer to schedule it.

RAIN on those hot Desktop or Laptop chips.
http://www.benchtest.com
I experienced a laptop cooling problem.
Not only was the laptop very hot but the cooling fan ran
almost 85% of the time which I figured was not good.
The solution was simple and very effective. I downloaded a
small freeware program called Rain from
Benchtest.com. This program sends a signal to
the CPU to "shut down" when not in use and now I find the
laptop is cool to the touch all the time and the fan barely
runs at all. Best of all; NO other changes such as
degradation of speed. This program was originally written for
extreme overclockers and there desktop computer's.

Spamihilator                         W9x/2k/XP                      FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106027
Spamihilator is an anti-spam filtering program that works with any
e-mail client. It runs as a local POP server that sits between
your e-mail program and your mail server, and filters mail based
on a built-in filtering mechanism. In addition, you can maintain a
blocklist as well as a list of friends (whose mail will never be
filtered). The program comes with a nice interface and
automatically configures popular e-mail clients (Outlook, Outlook
Express, Netscape, etc.).   Of course you can use MOZILLA
and it's built in spam and filters.  A much better choice.

Phoxel Unit Converter                  W9x/2k/XP                FREE
http://www.geocities.com/phoxel/
{Unit conversion tool} Phoxel Unit Converter converts any unit to
another unit using 16 conversion topics. Topics include angle,
area, cooking, computer storage, energy, frequency, length, light,
speed, temperature, time, torque, power, pressure, volume, and
weight. You can choose the number of decimal places, and also
request to get the results in scientific notation. The interface
makes it easy to dig right in, as each topic has its own tab. Pick
a tab (computer storage OK with you?), enter a number to convert
(2500), choose the unit of the number (megabytes), (I skipped
decimal places and scientific notation, which are optional) and
pressed the equal button to get the conversion in gigabit,
megabit, kilobit, bit, gigabyte, megabyte, kilobytes, and byte.
I've seen various converters, but I like the all-in-one package
and its simplicity.

The Word Spy
http://www.wordspy.com/
{Words and phrases} Logophiles unite! The Word Spy looks at
emerging words and phrases, old words used in new ways, and
existing words brought back to life. Learn a new word by checking
Today's Word, or learn about someone who wrote words, such as
Ambrose Bierce. The Top 100 words are based on page views from the
past seven days. In the number one spot is "wife acceptance
factor," which is defined something in an object (especially an
electronic device that normally appeals only to men), the
qualities or features which, added to or modified in the object,
make it acceptable to women. Read further for citations, usage,
figure of speech, background information, and earliest usage of
the word. I learned a new word: camouflanguage. Insurance
companies, lawyers, politicians, and C-level executives are guilty
of this. The meaning? "Language that uses jargon, euphemisms, and
other devices to hide the true meaning of what is being said."

TerraClient                         W9x/2k/XP                          FREE
http://billfriedrich.tripod.com/
{Satellite photo viewer} See where you are in this big world. You
may have used Microsoft TerraServer
[http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/] to find your little
place. TerraClient works with TerraServer and lets you print, save
images, and view a map overlay. It's the map overlay that makes it
standout from TerraServer because it superimposes a "paper"
roadmap over the satellite photos making it easier to find your
spot. First, I entered Fort Worth, TX, into the Place. The
satellite photos of my hometown looked weird, so I clicked on
"Load Paper Map" to get a better idea of the lay of the land. To
find the exact location of the neighborhood, I went to TerraServer
and entered the address of my childhood home, because TerraClient
only allows me to enter the city or the longitude / latitude
(which I didn't know until looking it up on TerraServer). When I
found the longitude and latitude, I entered it into TerraClient
and saw a different view than TerraServer. Using TerraServer and
TerraClient together provides more detail than using either alone.
You can see a few other places to view besidesNorth American
countries at TerraServer [http://terraserver.com/].

The Secret Guide to Computers
http://secretguide.net/
{Computer guide} Before you think this is another boring guide to
computers, read the author's intro: "Unlike a 'Dummies' book
(which is written for dummies and keeps them dumb) and a 'standard
textbook' (shoved at overworked college students to bore them into
snoring louder), this book throws you into the action fast, makes
you competent, and then makes you wise. It explains how to buy a
computer, then use its operating systems and programs, then
reprogram it to change its soul and launch your career."

DLL Downloads
http://www.dll-downloads.com/
{Download DLL files} DLL is short for Dynamic Link Library, a
library of executable functions or data used by a Windows
application. A DLL provides one or more particular functions, and
a program accesses the functions by creating either a static or
dynamic link to the DLL. A static link remains constant during
program execution, while the program (as needed) creates a dynamic
link. DLLs can also contain just data, and usually end with the
extension .dll, .exe, drv, or .fon. This site lets you search for
.dll, .drv, and .ocx files and download them. When you boot your
PC or run a program, you might get a DLL error when a file is
missing. Record the name of the file and see if the site has it. A
.drv or driver is a program that interacts with a particular
device or special (frequently optional) kind of software. The
driver contains the special knowledge of the device or special
software interface that programs using the driver do not. In
personal computers, a driver is often packaged as a dynamic link
library (DLL) file. OCX is short for OLE Custom control, an
independent program module that can be accessed by other programs
in a Windows environment. OCX controls represent Microsoft's
second generation of control architecture, the first being VBX
controls written in Visual Basic. Both VBX and OCX controls have
now been superseded by ActiveX controls. However, ActiveX is
backward compatible with OCX controls, which means that ActiveX
containers, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, can execute OCX
components. The site has annoying ads, but provides valuable
information and offers it in other languages.

Newseum
http://www.newseum.org/
{Museum of news} Extra! Extra! Read all about it! OK, that's
kitschy, but I just had to say it since I was plumb out of clever
intro ideas. The Web site of the Newseum located in Washington,
D.C., breaks out of its shell to share its exhibits with the
world. Newseum was founded by the Freedom Forum, which is a
nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech, and
free spirit for all people. Freedom Forum has made its first
priority a reality through the Newseum. Here, you can read from
any of today's 200 front pages from 27 countries. Mouse over each
newspaper thumbnail and get a glimpse of what made the headlines
and where. The fascinating thing about reading these covers is
seeing what the media of each country, city, or region considers
most important to report to their readers. In the War Stories
section, hear from journalists about what it's like to cover war
during any of the eight wars listed. Take a Flash tour of the
media's coverage, reporting, and technology progress from the
Civil War to current times. A pen is hardly a weapon or a suit of
armor for the reporters out in the field, side-by-side with the
soldiers. This is one Web site where you can honestly say, "Hot
off the press!"

Write a Senior Citizen
http://www.writeseniors.com/
{Pen pals for seniors} Do you know someone over 75 years old? Have
you asked them about their past and history? Bob Hope turns 100 in
May, and he must have many amazing stories in his mind from
traveling around the world and entertaining military troops. A
woman in her 80s has been around long enough to remember the New
London Elementary School [http://www.nlse.org] explosion in a
small Texas town. She was interviewed when the space shuttle
Columbia crashed, and said it was the first time she heard such
horrible noise since the New London fire. Seniors have taken to
computers to see pictures of family members and communicate with
them since they don't all have families close by. Write a Senior
Citizen helps seniors obtain pen pals from anywhere in the world.
It's a free service; imagine the stories you could learn, and in
exchange you can make another person happy just by writing e-
mails. Go make a new friend!

DrugDigest
http://www.drugdigest.org/
{Health and drug information} DrugDigest is a resource of non-
commercial, fact- based health and medical information to keep you
informed about the medicines on the market. Its information is not
limited to prescription drugs, as it provides details on vitamins,
herbs, medical research, health conditions, and disease
management. Learn the details about the medicines, vitamins, and
herbs by using the drug library. Ginseng is said to be useful for
improving memory; reading information on the herb indicates there
isn't enough evidence to support its therapeutic claims. The Check
Interactions tab is for checking drug interactions. Fighting a
cold, I entered all the off-the-counter medicines I'm taking (none
of which are helping, of course!) along with my prescription
medicine, and I received a report stating that there are no
issues. We have many choices on medication by class for allergies,
asthma, migraine headaches, and others. Look in the Compare Drugs
section to find out how the drug you're taking compares to others
like it. You can also compare side effects of similar drugs. The
site produces a chart with every symptom and its incidence rate.
The Senior Corner keeps seniors informed about topics most
important to them. I've seen other Web sites offering drug
information, interaction information, and other similar data; this
site is very neatly organized and easy to use.

Homeland Security Threat Monitor        W98/2k/XP            FREE

{Security threat updates} War. For it or against it, it's scary to
us all. With the media constantly reporting on the Iraq situation,
it's impossible not to know what's going on. In some cases, you
may not have access to the media, or don't think about going to a
news Web site for updates. Homeland Security Threat Monitor is a
small Windows application that runs in the system tray displaying
the current terrorism threat level. It even checks with the White
House Web server to ensure the information is updated. There are
five levels of the Homeland Security Advisory System: low,
guarded, elevated, high, and severe. When there is a change in the
threat level, the application will send a notification indicating
the change. Let's hope it doesn't hit severe.

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=101526
HotKeycontrol XP allows you to set custom hotkeys for specific
purposes, like launching applications, opening documents, hiding
windows, controlling your browser, ejecting your CD, restarting
your computer, and much more. It can turn any keyboard into a
Multimedia or Internet keyboard. You can adjust your volume with a
customizable on-screen display, and even send keystrokes that may
be used to type in commonly used text. The program is completely
customizable in all aspects; even the additional keys on your
existing Multimedia/Internet keyboard can be used with

and in other full-screen Direct 3D applications.

iOpus Secure                    W9x/2k/XP                              FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106060
iOpus Secure Email Attachments (SEA) allows you to create secure
e-mail attachments that can be opened by the recipient without the
need to install any software. The program creates self-decrypting
EXE attachments that can contain one or more files, and then
protects them with a password. All the recipient has to do is
enter the correct passwords, and the protected files will be
extracted. The program compresses the files, adding the additional
benefit of creating not only secure, but also smaller,
attachments. SEA is very easy to use, and offers a simple step-by-
step wizard to select the files and create the protected archive.
It integrates with the Explorer right-click menu, allowing you to
quickly create attachments from anywhere within Windows. In
addition, the program even allows you to include custom message
text, a disclaimer, a Web site link, and a company logo to
personalize the decryption screen. iOpus SEA uses the highly
secure Blowfish encryption algorithm with a key length of up to
448 bits.

Access Manager                       W9x/2k/XP                        FREE
http://www.citi-software.co.uk/am/
{Password storage} Access Manager keeps your passwords safe in one
place. It manages not just Web site passwords, but also private
PIN numbers, computer logon, door entry and alarm codes, e-mails,
software access, and telephone banking codes. Its look and feel is
based on Microsoft Outlook's design and it uses Blowfish
encryption for securing password information. Each password can
have notes associated with it along with links to Web sites and e-
mail addresses. If you're sick and tired of thinking of new
passwords, it'll automatically generate one for you. Organize
passwords into types and categories. Jump to a password by
entering the first letter of its description, or find it by
entering a part of its name. You can also print a full password
list for storage in a safe place (and your desk doesn't count as a
safe place). Think bank vault or someplace with a key. If you are
using Windows 95 or 98 [http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdn-
files/027/001/455/instmsia.exe], or NT4
[http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdn-files/027/001/456/instmsiw.exe],

Drivers On-Line
http://drivers.on-line.net.nz/
{Download drivers
}"Welcome to the only device driver site
you'll ever need." Drivers On-Line finds the software to match
your hardware. You can use the Driver Wizard to quickly find the
right drivers instead of going to a product's vendor (and getting
lost on their unusable Web site in search of the needed drivers).
All the drivers and software available from this site are stored
as ZIP files, so you will need to have software to extract the
individual files from them. If you're using Win9x/NT, there is the
option of downloading any driver as an executable file, thus
avoiding the need to install any additional software. The Web site
has a free Driver Wizard available for downloading and running to
identify the components you have on the PC. After it completes the
evaluation, click on the link to go to the Web site and get a list
of the latest drivers available. This site had a driver for all of
my components except for one. Note: The first time I ran the
wizard, my system froze. I rebooted and ran it again, and had no
problem.

Quick Favorites Search                    W9x/2k/XP            FREE
http://chris.id.au/qfs/default.htm
{Search Favorites or Bookmarks} This literally! tiny tool searches
your Favorites and Bookmarks files for Internet Explorer, Opera,
Netscape Navigator, and Mozilla. Actually, there's no mention of
Mozilla, but I tested it and it worked. If you have multiple
Favorites or Bookmarks, this tool can quickly search them all and
produce the results. Click each link one time and it tells you
what browser the URL came from. Click "-" to launch the URL in the
Web browser, click "+" to copy it to the clipboard, or hit Esc to
go back to the search box. The program doesn't even do anything to
the registry. Just unzip it and file it where you want to keep it.
When running the program, you get a little search box and a button
labeled "Pref." This is where the preferences can be changed, and
where you can tell the program where the Bookmarks are located.
Favorites are auto-detected, but you have to enter the others.

Look@FILE Secure File Transfer       W9x/2k/XP          FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106050
Look@FILE Secure File Transfer is a powerful and very user-
friendly network file transfer program. It allows you to send and
receive any file or directory with a few clicks. Features include
SSLv3 Encryption with openSSL, Auto- Compression, Transfer
Resuming, Receive Tunneling and support for dynamic DNS. Look@FILE
integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click menu and also
provides an interface with overall statistics, bandwidth graphs,
and a dynamic DNS address book. The connection can be secured and
limited to specific IP addresses. The program needs to be
installed on each machine that participates in the file transfer.

WinGet                              W9x/2k/XP                          FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106105
WinGet is an easy-to-use and small download accelerator that
speeds up your download time by splitting the file into multiple
threads while downloading, thereby maximizing the potential of
your Internet connection. The program can integrate with popular
browsers and automatically take over the download for selected
file types. WinGet is a good, basic download manager/accelerator.
It lacks some advanced features and does not (yet) support cookies
or authentication, so you could run into problems with some sites.

Natata Anti-Spam Encoder                    W9x/2k/XP               FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106099
NATATA Anti-Spam Encoder is a useful program for webmasters that
searches for e- mail addresses in your Web pages and encodes them
into a format that cannot be read by robots that spider Web sites
to extract e-mail addresses. Your visitor will not see the
difference; your encoded e-mail link will look and function
exactly as a normal link. The program allows you to create single
links manually and can also batch process multiple pages and
automatically convert any e-mail link it finds. It uses a non-Java
method to encode the link, so it is 100% compatible with any
browser.

Encrypted FTP                   W9x/2k/XP                      FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106123
EFTP (Encrypted File Transfer Protocol) is a client/server
application that offers the same functionality as standard FTP,
but with encryption. It uses a combination of Public Key
encryption and Symmetric Key encryption to allow fast and secure
transfers over any TCP/IP network, including the Internet. EFTP
offers an easy to use graphical interface with user management,
user groups, group administration, and more. The server can be run
as a strictly encrypted server, or like a regular FTP server that
allows connections from standard FTP clients as well. A small,
standalone client is included with the download, which can be used
to initiate a secure connection, to have EFTP obtain the most
secure level of data transfer. EFTP also includes several advanced
features like IP restrictions, logging, banned user list, and
more.

WipeOut                               W9x/2k/XP                                 FREE
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA031384/software/WipeOut_en.html
{Moves "blocking my way" windows} WipeOut is an application that
moves obstructive windows so that you can see your Desktop. When
you click on the icon for wipeout.exe, it may seem like nothing is
happening, but it is! There is a yellow line on the left of the
screen. Drag this "wiper" line to the right, and the window of the
application moves to the place to where the line is released. All
windows return to their original position when you click on the
Desktop icon or other windows. Right-click on the wiper line and
select "Options" to change configuration such as the color of the
line, the line width, and the location of the line. This software
does not add any keys to the registry, so you can unzip it and
run. If it's not for you, just delete the file.

BookmarkBridge                        W9x/2k/XP                          FREE

http://bookmarkbridge.sourceforge.net/
{Share bookmarks between multiple browsers} a small program for sharing
bookmarks between Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Opera. To use
it, be sure your browsers are closed before running the program to
synchronize the bookmarks between browsers. When I merged the two
files, I got errors. To get past the error, I went to the source
bookmark file and put an "ignore" (meaning it won't be included in
the merged file) on the item that caused the error. (It probably
didn't like the punctuation I used in the bookmark name.) Once I
got through all the errors, though, the two files merged into one.
The help file is thorough and its features are simple.

RefreshForce                             W2k/XP                           FREE
http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/
{Repairs refresh rate} Some users have problems with the refresh
rate in Windows 2000 or XP and programs resolving the problem
often only offer a temporary solution, and don't always work with
new driver releases. RefreshForce universally and permanently
fixes the Windows 2000/XP refresh rate problem on ANY variation of
graphics cards, monitors, or drivers. It functions regardless of
graphics card or driver versions. Execute the program one time,
and it doesn't require a reboot. Its GUI is simple, and when
starting the program, it auto-detects the optimal refresh rate of
the monitor for each resolution setting and sets this new refresh
rate as the default. You can stop here, apply the changes and be
done, or you can do further tweaking. It has the ability to push
plug and play monitor drivers over 85Hz, and supports systems with
multiple display adapters. RefreshForce has an automatic backup
facility and the ability to lower refresh rates as well as
increase them, if software causes display corruption.

Hidden Mozilla Preferences
http://www.geocities.com/pratiksolanki/
{Unlock Mozilla's hidden mysteries} No matter how long I've used
Mozilla or Windows, I continually learn new tricks. As you can
probably tell from the URL, there will be ads on the pages, which
are easy to ignore with the valuable information available. You
can change your preferences for Mozilla using the prefs.js file,
which is located in your profile directory: C: \ Documents and
Settings \ [name] \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Users \ [name] \
[garbled letters].slt \
Before you start working on this file, close Mozilla. Yes, e-mail,
in the system tray, and the browser. (No cheating!) Another
approach is to create a file called user.js, and details for doing
this are listed on the Web page. The green text (or lines preceded
with // ) on the page lists what the change will do and the lines
without // is what you enter into your prefs.js (or user.js) file
to implement the feature. Have you seen replies where it says
something like, "Meryl babbled:" prior to the quoted text? You,
too, can do it by going to the instructions under MailNews: Change
the Reply Header. Make changes to the browser, mail/news, address
book, LDAP, editor, and network. Happy personalizing.

{Create a new profile without starting from scratch} Why would
anyone want to create a new profile with existing user data? Well,
perhaps the profile could be corrupted, or maybe you want to
create a new profile with all the same information for a new user
(or your secret identity). When you copy user data into a new
profile, the new profile becomes a close copy of the old profile
containing the same preferences, appearance, and documents. When a
profile is corrupted, move the files and settings from the corrupt
profile to a new profile. There are two parts to making this
happen: creating a new user profile and copying files to the new
profile.

ExcelTip.com

http://www.exceltip.com/
{Tips for MS Excel} I think the Web site name tells it all.
ExcelTip.com provides Excel tips and tricks. Excel users can
search for tips, submit tips, talk Excel, receive tips and Excel
add-ins via e-mail, and bookmark tips without registering. What
about Excel versions? Click on the Tips by Version tab and pick
your version to get tips. The site is well organized and usable.
Considering there are many tips available, the tips are organized
into tabs for easy browsing with categories of Tip of the Hour,
Recommended Tips, Most Viewed Tips, and Tip Categories. This site
has only recently launched, and I expect it to grow over time. I
had the bad fortune of managing a training program's metrics using
Excel. It was a nightmare, but it got done and most of it could be
managed automatically. I'll be waiting for tips using Excel for
uncommon spreadsheeting work, which is anything that doesn't fall
under finances, sales, and time.

Notepad Pro                 W9x/2k/XP                      FREE
http://www.zhakaas.com/npro/features.php
{Skinnable text editor} This is practically "the little Notepad
that could." It's small but powerful, and sits quietly in the
System Tray. Notepad Pro comes with 20 built-in skins, plus more
are available via the Web site. Some skins may give little Notepad
space, but experiment with them until you find one that suits you.
(Yes, it's missing resizing capabilities, and the FAQ explains
why.) The editor supports 11 languages and has a built-in Winamp
controller. It can display a list of recent files, use basic
shortcuts like Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V (its help file has a list of
the shortcuts), and comes with keylogger mode. Keylogger mode
captures everything you type, even when the program isn't in
focus. Notepad Pro has no trouble handling a 1900 (plus) kilobyte
file. In fact, it did a better job displaying the file's contents
than Windows's Notepad, which had those annoying ASCII boxes.
Another neat feature is its ability to convert text files to Adobe
Acrobat-compatible PDF files. And this is more for show: the
Notepad can be transparent for those using Win2k and XP.

TimeCore                      W9x/2k/XP                      FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106088
TimeCore is a time management solution for individuals who need an
easy-to-use way to track their time. It allows you to create
multiple project, rates, and activities in a database and then
track an unlimited number of entries, search them, and create
reports. In addition, you can set reminders for specific events.
The program tracks your time by automatically closing the current
session when a new one is opened. You can also set breaks and
manually enter the start/end times.

GhostTyperXML Private Edition            W98/2k/XP   FREE
http://www.sc-data.de/ghosttyper/en/
{Text macro} Sig files hold our signature, so that our signature
can automatically show up in the footer of an e-mail. No typing it
for every single message, and plus, you can quickly delete parts
of the signature if you wish. GhostTyperXML builds on this
concept, but with macros for more than just the signature. It can
do frequently used e-mail addresses, e-mail body, links, and more.
It also allows you to use it with any application, not just e-mail
or a word processor. Create shortcuts and hotkeys for any entry.
Use the shortcut and ghost does the typing for you. Each time we
save ourselves typing, we take another step in fighting off carpal
tunnel.

iDisk Utility                            WXP                         FREE
http://www.mac.com/1/idiskutility_download.html
{iDisk group file sharing} iDisk Utility for Windows makes sharing
files and connecting public folders and iDisk easier. Transfer
files too large to e-mail, exchange documents with Mac and Window
users, or just store files online. The program lets you connect to
your iDisk, allow others to put files in your public folder,
access another .Mac member's iDisk, open multiple iDisks, and view
the available storage space on the iDisk. Unlike the Mac version,
the Windows version doesn't have access privilege control
capabilities. The purpose is to make it easier for people who use
a Mac at home to use .Mac services from their Windows XP machine
(at work or elsewhere). (Yet another step in the Apple switch
campaign!) Some of the functionality of iDisk Utility for Windows
requires a .Mac membership. If you aren't a .Mac member yet, go to
http://www.mac.com/ for more information. Mac membership isn't free.

RealPopup                               W9x/2k/XP                        FREE
http://www.realpopup.it/
{WinPopUp replacer} RealPopup replaces old winpopup.exe with a
full-featured freeware tool, which remains as stable and simple as
its predecessor. RealPopup is compatible with system messenger
services as well as old Win9x system messaging tools; in other
words, it's fully integrated with your LAN environment. It
supports many useful features such as hypertexts, options for
users and groups, an internal network browser, auto-complete for
names, and more. RealPopup is available in many languages for
free. Instant messengers are applications designed to work through
the Internet allowing you to communicate with people, while
RealPopup is designed to communicate with your local network
friends. RealPopup doesn't require any network setup or an
Internet connection. It doesn't require any application server;
just install it and begin to communicate. RealPopup is fully
integrated with the system. For example, you'll receive messages
from printer spoolers, as well as from SQL Server Agents.

Visual Thought                           W9x/2k/XP                FREE
http://www.bombshellstudios.com/samples/co/vt.html
{Diagramming and flowcharting} I live and breathe boxes and arrows
in my office job as a process analyst in a software development
shop. Unlike the software I use at the office and at home, this
one is free. Before running the program, enter the License Key by
clicking the Admin icon from the Visual Thought program group on
the Windows Start Menu and the Admin dialog box appears. Enter the
License Key into the dialog box and click OK. The license key is
available on the download page. It's good for 14 years... so what
happens after 14 years? Then again, 14 years is ancient in
computer software years, and something better will come along. The
purpose of Visual Thought is to visually communicate relationships
between things. The tutorial guides you through your first
drawing. Unfortunately, there are no tooltips on the main toolbar,
and you'll need to dig through the tutorial to find out what each
represents. Based on my experience with previous flow programs, I
could figure out a few things without needing help. Drawing the
connecting lines took work.

Virtual Desktop Manager Powertoy             WinXP        FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106079
Virtual Desktop Manager is a Microsoft Powertoy for Windows XP. It
allows you to maintain up to four different desktops, each with
its own applications and desktop wallpapers. It integrates into
the taskbar and allows you to quickly switch between your virtual
desktops. You can also assign keyboard hotkeys to switch between
or preview all 4 desktops at once. For example, you can open your
e-mail program on one desktop, an Internet chess game on the
second, several Internet sessions on the third, and multiple
database sessions on the fourth.

IMage CATalog                 W9x/2k/XP                   FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=101757
IMCAT is a thumbnailing utility that is capable of batch
processing directories and converting all found images into
thumbnails. It can identify and delete orphan thumbnails, guess
image titles from file names, and more. Advanced mode offers many
professional-level features, like file name modification,
unlimited banner code insertion, extensive Meta tag support,
advanced navigational menu control, as well as creation of a
separate page for each image feature, driven by templates that can
be edited. The program offers both an Express and an Advanced
mode; the advanced mode offers most of the features mentioned,
while the Express mode performs simple batch conversions of image
directories. Both modes are available in this free version;
however, a Pro version is also available, which adds directory
batch in Advanced mode.

done free organizer.

BS/1 Software Enterprise with Manufacturing   W9x/2k/XP   FREE
http://www.dbsonline.com/enterprise/
{Inventory system} BS/1 Enterprise with Manufacturing is an
integrated, multi- currency, manufacturing, distribution and
accounting system, which includes Accounts Payable, Accounts
Receivable, General Ledger, Inventory, Purchase Orders, Sales
Orders and Quotes, Manufacturing, and Sales Analysis. All of these
items are available in a drop-down list in the compact-sized
program screen. Companies doing business on an international basis
will appreciate the multi- currency feature for billing and
purchasing. The program converts the revenues and expenses to
domestic currency. The Web site displays a screen shot of the
system and each of its key features. For those accounting-challenged
folks like me, the Getting Started wizard assists with entering the
initial data. Those who learn by example can review the sample data
on how a food manufacturer can use the program.

AAScripter                       W98/2k/XP                       FREE
http://www.cyberiapc.com/aa/aascripter.htm
{Scripts for Webmaster} In the almost ten years I've had a Web
site, I've always looked for new scripts to add to the site to
make it function better. AAScripter contains over 200 scripts, for
which a Webmaster can read information about the script, view a
demo, and copy and paste the code. There is a help section and an
option for adding your own scripts. Scripts include status bar
effects, text effects, image and sound effects, mouse cursors,
forms, and math-related scripts

DivXRepair                         W9x/2k/XP                      FREE
http://divxrepair.sourceforge.net/
{Repair corrupt AVI files} When playing .AVI (video) files, you
may run into problems with the video freezing while the sound
continues to play, or "drunken" blocks of pixels distorting the
image. DivXRepair can repair the corrupted files and unfreeze the
freezes. It detects and cuts off the bad parts, and reassembles
the file. The bad parts are undecodable or freezing frames. To
make it work, add the AVI files using "Add File" and click on
"Repair Files." If DivXRepair detects problem areas, it will save
the AVI as a new file in the same directory as the old, and
generate a report.

Webcam for MSN Messenger       W98/2k/XP     FREE
http://messenger.msn.com/support/webcam.asp
{Video instant messenging}OK, sit down....this may be a shock;
I saw two words never heard together the above site:
"FREE" and "Microsoft" !!!
both sides of the conversation need to have MSN Messenger v5.0, a
compatible Web cam, and this free software to use it. It just
a couple of minutes you can talk face to face with anyone
on the web.

Audigy2 Software for SB Live           W98/2k/XP          FREE
http://www3.telus.net/henryho/sblive2audigy/
{Audio driver} To answer your question, yes; the file IS that big.
If you lose connection while downloading it, download it again and
it should pick up where you previously left off. If you have a
Soundblaster Live!, you can improve its capabilities with the
Audigy2 Software Package. Gain enhanced sound quality, enhanced
dynamic range, and the ability to use Creative MEDIASOURCE. The
Web site translated the Chinese to English and explains how to
install the program. There is a forum for discussing the program,
if more help and information is required.

Image Selection Tool

http://www.imageselectiontool.com/
{Images with stories} Image Selection Tool allows you to select
people and things within digital images and annotate the specific
selection. This is more than an image map, because the selections
are treated as independent objects and (conceptually) recognized
as visual representations of real-world objects. The objects can
be stored either within the image file (currently JPEG files
only), or in a related file or database. The tool works online,
but you can download the Java version and sync it with the Web
site.

Fusion                                    W9x/2k/XP                           FREE
http://www.fusionmedia.org/
{Media player} Fusion Windows Media Player is based on DirectShow
and features most of the latest audio and video formats (if the
appropriate codecs have been installed, such as MP3, WAV, WMV, and
DivX). It gives you the ability to listen to many radio
broadcasters from around the world, record streaming content to
your hard drive, and watch DVDs with access to all of the options
and menus. The program has no spyware or spam. You might have a
favorite audio and media player and that's cool. Different strokes
for different folks. Some may love this one. Personally, I'm not
picky about anything having to do with audio and video so long as
it plays. XML technology will be available soon.

DVD Encrypter                          W9x/2k/XP                  FREE
http://www.dvddecrypter.com/
{DVD ripper} DVD Decrypter is a free tool that enables you to
decrypt and copy a DVD to your PC's hard drive. Advanced
functionality can be found in the context menus. (Get the context
menu by right-clicking the mouse button.) Context menus are
(currently) available in three places within DVD Decrypter. By
default, the program will - where possible - automatically select
the source (for example, the DVD drive) and the destination folder
(by finding the drive with the most free disk space). The 'Main
Movie' files will have already been selected for you. In about 10-
30 minutes (depending on the speed of your computer / DVD drive),
it will finish, and you will have DeCSSed VOB files on your hard
drive. You can choose to watch them with PowerDVD and WinDVD or
you can re-encode them to MPEG1 (VCD) or DivX. DVD Decrypter keeps
a log of everything it does.

Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery           W98/2k/XP       FREE
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital_image_recovery.htm
{Image data recovery} You took many pictures with your digital camera.
And  horror of horrors,  somehow you lost the pictures that were
stored on the media card.  Zero Assumption comes to the rescue with
program that digs up the lost photo-souls. It works with any media type
(CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick, etc) accessible through
Windows. How can photos be recovered when they've been deleted or
pulled a disappearing act? It's possible because when "deleting,"
cameras typically delete references to photos - not the photos
themselves - meaning the photos are still in memory, but not
accessible through the usual methods. Non-standard methods like
this program can recover images as long as no new data was written
over them.

Find Videos
http://findvideos.com/
{Watch music videos online} I was a teenager when MTV hit the
scene, and it was the only choice we had. No VH-1 or any other
station. If we wanted to watch a video again, we had to wait until
MTV felt like airing it again. Today's music fans don't have that
problem, and Find Videos searches the Internet to find music
videos to watch from the Web site. Furthermore, none of the videos
had closed-captioning and today many do, but not the online
videos, of course. The media player format varies based on the
artist, but most use Windows Media Player, Real Player, or Other.
Hey, there are videos from the early MTV days included on the
site... impressive! You can search for an artist or song, or
browse by genre. Along with the artist and song, there are links
to the official Web sites and to purchasing the music. Man, those
folks behind bored.com are so bored they keep coming up with these
gems to entertain the rest of us. Now, where is Chicago's
"Africa?"

ModelPress Publisher                    W2k/XP                  FREE
http://www.modelpress.com/
ModelPress Publisher reads native 3D CAD model files and
compresses the model assembly, creating a secure, non-editable ISF
file viewable with the free ModelPress Viewer. The creators claim
the program can compress 70% to 98% of the original file size. The
ModelPress Viewer views the ModelPress Publisher compressed ISF
files. It can be a standalone desktop application or be embedded
in another desktop application; or, it can be embedded in custom
Web pages to be a Web-delivered control, designed to work with
Microsoft Internet Explorer. ModelPress doesn't use an application
server, so scalability is not an issue. The published file sizes
are manageable, allowing formerly huge models to display quickly.
Because ModelPress does not require a live session server, ISF
files can be downloaded or e-mailed and viewed off-line, just as
with other popular Web publishing formats.

cdTree Standard                     W9x/2k/XP                 FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105985
cdTree is a media cataloging tool, that will let you catalog and
categorize CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, hard disk directories, floppies,
Zip drives, DVDs, and audio CDs for offline browsing and
searching. You can optionally add notes and user- configurable
fields for any of the objects in the catalog. cdTree also enables
you to password protect a specific catalog file, create custom
categories, search the catalog content, view CD statistics and
more. Additional features include sprint support, backups, custom
fonts, and icons. This version is free to keep. Several additional
features are offered in a Pro version.

WindScreen.TV
http://www.windscreen.tv/
{Pictures that go whoosh!} Web sites with picture projects are fun
to explore to see how people capture the one idea in their own
creative way. WindScreen.tv is another picture project gallery in
which the object is to take pictures through car windows.
Appropriate name, no? Do plane windows count? Doesn't look like
it. What about trucks? OK, OK, I'll stop getting technical here.
Go on and submit your own picture with a short description or
story, the location of the picture, and the date taken. Looking
through the gallery evokes various emotions like the one taken in
the Nevada desert with nothing but dirt and a van ahead. One can't
help but feel lonely or a quiet moment. There are photos with
blizzards, mountains' majesty, and fruited plains... does this
sound like a song? Oh, it's been done (the song title is "America
the Beautiful" for those of you not familiar with it). I'll have
to look for a photo or take one, as I have photos on various
project sites. It's fun having an "assignment" rather than to just
go out there shooting.

iUpload
http://www.iupload.net/
{Get images on the Net} Don't have a virtual home at which you can
drop your virtual pictures and e-files? Use iUpload to upload
.gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, and .zip files no larger than 2000
kilobytes. All you have to do is click Browse and find your
picture and select it. Click Upload and it immediately uploads,
and provides an URL for linking to the picture. For many, this is
an easier process than trying to send a file using FTP (file
transfer protocol). There is no information on whether or not
there is a limit on the number of images you can upload. Here's
your chance to share a picture with others within minutes.

EXEtract Images                 W9x/2k/XP                        FREE
http://ktk.ru/~camelot/exetractimages.htm
{Grab images from executables} Where was this tool when I was
searching the 'Net over for an icon, a common one? It was Murphy's
Law at its best. I see the icon all the time, yet when I needed
it... it never appeared before me. I loaded this program, opened
an executable file containing over 2000 images and icons,
including the one I had spent too much time seeking. EXEtract can
extract images from EXE, DLL, and OCX files. It's a no-frills
program that allows you to search for files with one of these
extensions, or look into folders. After the images are extracted,
use the arrow key to go through them one by one and save any image
in its native format. Now, you can access the individual image
without opening or searching the executable file.

Query Strings for Windows Media Player v6.4 through v9

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315959
{Troubleshooting Windows Media Player} There are switches for
using with Windows Media Player to assist in troubleshooting.
These switches are added in the form of a query string to the end
of a requested URL. For example, the command line starts with:
mms://server/content.wmv? After the ?, add the switch with its
value. Switches include WMThinning, WMBitrate, WMContentBitrate,
WMReconnect, WMCache, WMFecSpan, and WMFecPktsPerSpan. If you want
to change the number of times that Windows Media Player will
automatically try to reconnect to the content, enter:
mms://server/content.wmv?WMReconnect=5. In this case, I am telling
it I want it to try five times before giving up. If you don't like
your PC to be a quitter, up the number.

CDDA Ripper                          W98/2k/XP                          FREE
http://www.milix.net/cddarip/index.html
{Rip CD tracks} Featuring this program is not a hint that you
should steal audio. Rather, use CDDA Ripper if you want to extract
contents from your CD and encode them to PCM, WAV, MP3, WMA, or
OGG Vorbis files for your PC. True, there are plenty of such
programs from which to choose, and I don't recommend one over the
other, especially since I'm no audio pro. CDDA Ripper offers CDDB
and ID3 tag support, templates for track name generation, a built-
in CD player, and the option to put an album into its own folder.
The steps are easy enough. Start the program, assign a folder,
insert the audio CD, press F5 to refresh, select the tracks you
want, and press Ctrl + R. Yeah! If I can do it, you can, too.

Jahshaka                      W9x/2k/XP                              FREE
http://www.jahshaka.com/
{Editing and effects} Though this editing/special
effects/compositing application is still in the alpha stages and
continuously updated, some readers may want to hop on board and
help with the testing, while others may want to wait until Version
3.0, which is coming soon. The program works with uncompressed video and
audio with the following modules included: desktop (main),
animation, editing, effects, paint, text, and library, with more
coming. It uses OpenGL to give its users real-time effects,
interactivity, and hardware rendering. This is another program
from SourceForge, where most - if not everything - is released
under the GNU General Public License. The program has several
requirements, so check those in the install.txt file that's
included with the download. Most real-time editing platforms are
pricey.

Disk Image Viewer                    W9x/2k/XP                   FREE
http://www.softwarium.com/
{Browse images} Disk Image Viewer is a file utility that can
browse the floppy and hard drives for images in EXT2 (Linux) and
FAT (DOS, Windows) file systems. It can also copy files from the
images. It supports EXT2, FAT12 and FAT16 file systems,
multipartition hard drive images; it recognizes disk images
automatically, and has drag and drop functionality. Softwarium
offers two other freeware programs. Restore Desktop is a Windows
context menu, which automatically saves and restores icons'
positions on the Desktop after changing the display resolution.
Align Icons is another Windows context menu for aligning icons to
your preferences, which can be aligned left, right, top, or
bottom. Another useful tool for organized freaks like me!

Snug                           W95/2k/XP                           FREE
http://puz.com/sw/freeware/page3.htm
{Puzzle game} Snug is an older game, but some of the best games
are not new games. The goal is to fit five randomly shaped pieces
into a square using the mouse to move, flip, and rotate the
blocks. It takes no time to figure out the game, and kids can play
it. If you want more games like this, look around the Web site for
more. HexMaze draws hexagonal mazes and you have to find your way
out from one point to the other.

Explore2fs                       W9x/2k/XP                          FREE
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
{Copy Linux transferred files into Windows}  The program can read
and interpret the Ext2fs files System. Note that there have been
reports that, under Windows 95, Explore2fs has possibly caused
partition table corruption. Although this has not been proven,
just be aware of it. The program supports ext2 and ext3, drag and
drop, and file and directory exporting / importing, to name just a
few of its features. Be sure to read the notes specific to your
Windows OS before proceeding.

Osnofian Linux "One Floppy" Mp3 Player v1.0 Beta  W9x/2k/XP FREE

as a "standalone" or can be inserted as an eltorito boot image in
a CD-ROM.

HTTP State Management Mechanism
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2109.txt
{Cookie and Set-Cookie HTTP state} This document specifies a way
to create a stateful session with HTTP requests and responses. It
describes two new headers, "Cookie" and "Set-Cookie," which carry
state information between participating origin servers and user
agents. The method described here differs from Netscape's Cookie
proposal, but it can interoperate with HTTP/1.0 user agents that
use Netscape's method. The two state management headers, Set-
Cookie and Cookie, have common syntactic properties involving
attribute-value pairs. The outline shows a way for an origin
server to send state information to the user agent, and for the
user agent to return the state information to the origin server.
The goal is to have a minimal impact on HTTP and user agents.
Only origin servers that need to maintain sessions would suffer
any significant impact, and that impact can largely be confined to
Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs, unless the server
provides more sophisticated state management support.

Remove Files with Reserved Names in WinNT/2K
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=120716
{Trash reserved name files} Because programs control the policy
for creating files in Windows, files are sometimes created by
using names that are not valid, or by using reserved names, such
as LPT1 or PRN. This article describes how to delete such files by
using the standard user interface. To do this, you need to be
logged into Windows locally. Files created on a file allocation
table (FAT) partition can be deleted under MS-DOS by using
standard command line utilities (such as DEL) with wildcard(s).
The article explains how to use POSIX commands and its valid
command line switches. If you're not comfortable with POSIX and
switches, get some help to keep your sanity.

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106130
Sniphere is a WinPCAP network sniffer that supports most of common
protocols. It can be used on Ethernet devices and supports PPPoE
modems. The program allows you to set filters based on IP, Mac
Address, ports, protocol, etc., and also decodes packages into an
easy-to-understand format. In addition, session logs can be saved
in XML format and selected packets copied to the clipboard.
Sniphere supports most common protocols, including IP, TCP, UDP
and ICMP. Very small standalone program.

jclassinfo W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://jclassinfo.sourceforge.net/
{Java class files} jclassinfo reads Java .class files and provides
information about the class and dependencies. It is pure C
implementation and does not depend on any external libraries
except for the standard C library for your platform. Information
includes VM requirements, inheritance, packages required, fields
and method signatures, and class attributes. Command line options
are available for extracting information and obtaining verbose
information.
