FEATURE
Hi everyone,
Over the past few months I have talked to many of you at the meetings
and in the course
of many conversations the need for a certain type program has come up.
When I asked
most of those I talked with if they had checked the "Corner" they had
never been there.
So I took a poll on the use of the "Corner" and found that only 14 of
you use it at all.
Even if I assume that half the folks who use it failed to write, it
still would be only a bit over 10%.
So I have decided to truncate both, the descriptions of the programs,
and the number of programs listed.
I will look for unique, useful, important, and/or greatly improved
versions of winners.
I will endeavor to stay away from the antiquated or limited use stuff
generally.
I will try and pick those that will have the greatest appeal.
As I have a weakness for utility programs you might see lots of them.
If you have any ideas about a program you would like to see, write
out a description
of what you want it to do in detail and send it out as a GCC email.
If there is anything like it one of us may know just the program for
you.
For instance lets say one of you likes what RealPlayer does but for some
VERY good reasons you don't want RealPlayer spying on you and
crashing your system. Then someone will recommend to you Jet Audio.
JET AUDIO will replace REAL PLAYER which is **SPYWARE**!!!
Not only is it sending info about you out, it also is a bloated
unstable piece of garbage.
JET AUDIO does not spy or nag you. I have it installed and I love it.
Another one of the many added to "MITCH'S CORNER"
this month is SmartMorph.
This is just fun. It is so easy to use I never even
opened the help file.
You can 'morph' from any image to another one and export the file as an
AVI.
Here is one I made. (Click on cartoon picture).

REAL PLAYER by REALAUDIO is a rotten
piece of SPYWARE!!!
You should delete this from your system unless you really, really need
it.
And you almost certainly don't because......
there
is a FREE alternative.
There's a freeware product called JetAudio that seems to fit
the bill perfectly:
http://www.jetaudio.com
It plays .RA, .RAM, and .RMI files (which isn't all RealAudio
content, but it meets my simple needs.) It appears to be free
of spy-, ad- or nag-ware, and (outside of some initial
twiddling with the file associations) it appears to work
perfectly. Test the software on Real's test site:

USEFUL SITES
BrainBlisters http://www.brainblisters.com
{Puzzles and games} BrainBlisters is a collection of puzzles,
games, illusions, and other fun stuff. The site, up since 1997,
brags (deservedly so!) that it has over thousands of puzzles, and
adds five new puzzles every week. In the puzzle section, you can
have the site randomly select a puzzle for you based on
difficulty. Next to each puzzle is a rating based on user ratings.
You can search for a puzzle by keyword, or select a puzzle by all-
time top ten, recent top ten, logic, and crosswords. Games are
just that: games such as board games, strategy, word games,
arcade, and contests. Illusions are the place to do some fancy
eyework.
ActiveBass http://www.activebass.com/
ActiveBass is an online community and education-based
site for bassists so they could share information about bass.
Those looking to learn bass can look for lessons by geographical
area or better yet, take them online at the site. ActiveBass has
the tools for visitors to create online music lessons for
beginners, intermediate, advanced, expert, and ridiculous
(seriously!) players.
Naughtycodes.com http://www.naughtycodes.com/
{Coupon codes} A pet peeve of mine is when I'm checking out of an
online store and I see a space for entering a discount coupon
code. Before proceeding with check out, I search the Web to see if
I can find the code. Naughtycodes.com looks for such discount
coupon codes and organizes the available codes alphabetically by
store name. The interface is simple and the search results display
in an organized manner.
Ryze http://www.ryze.com/
{Business networking} To be honest, I'm guarded whenever I see a
Web site offering networking opportunities, because they usually
have a complex pay schedule and you just don't know if it's worth
the investment. I've just never had a good feeling about such Web
sites. Ryze gives you two reasons to give it a try. One - it lets
you sign with an assigned name to see the demo version without
giving away personal information. Two - its basic features are
available for free. It DOES have paid plans and it clearly
explains the benefits of each plan.

Knowing Poe
http://knowingpoe.thinkport.org/
{Life and times Edgar Allan Poe} In tenth grade, I read his "The
Masque of the Red Death." It was a fascinating story, but gave me
chills and a few bad dreams. Entering the site sets the right tone
for presenting his works, with its black and white scheme and a
raven in the shadows. The infamous raven, from his poem,
appropriately provides inside information throughout the Web site.
An impressive feature provides suggestions to parents for helping
children with their school activities. More sites should consider
this example and consider implementing such features, because we
learn best with real world activities. Explore the library, read a
few poems, or watch actor John Astin read "The Raven" as Poe.
AncientScripts.com
http://www.ancientscripts.com/
{Writing systems and linguistics} Another goodie for language
lovers. Writing systems is a topic I've heard little about, and
the Web site offers much insight into the topic. Looking around
the site, you can't help but get the feeling the creator is
passionate about the topic, especially since he has maintained and
updated this site since 1996. Explore Writing systems by types,
families, and regions. Take a break from learning and play

month and year dating back to August 2000. CD-R is definitely not
one of my stronger topics, yet reading the "Armor Plated or

Hot Deals Club
http://www.hotdlz.com/
{Save, save, save} Since I left home for life in college and have
been on my own, I've been a coupon clipper and did what I could to
save money. The Web is full of sites with discount codes and
information for online and offline shopping. Hot Deals Club is
updated two to five times each day. The editors state they
carefully evaluate the deals and don't earn commissions from
clickthroughs. The deals are easy to scan and are sorted by date.
The store is highlighted and linked in blue, followed by a bold
description of the deal. Beneath that information is a brief
explanation of the deal. The site has a feature called Stealth
Clickthru, which ensures your URL information is private when you
click on links to other sites.
The FeedRoom
http://www.feedroom.com/
{Just like TV - only better} That's not my opinion, but instead
it's The FeedRoom's slogan, and a bold one at that. There is a
pop-up screen when you enter the site, and it's a safe pop-up. The
FeedRoom is an Internet broadcaster, which is a network of news,
entertainment, and corporate site delivering streaming videos to
Internet viewers. Watch news feeds covering entertainment, news,

SHORTCUTS - UTILITIES - SECURITY
AuditMyPC.com http://www.auditmypc.com/
{Free online firewall tests} The site is promoting security
awareness by offering free an online security audit, firewall
test, and research center. You can audit your firewall, do a port
scan, or do a privacy test to get immediate results, with
information about how to act upon problem areas. The site also
offers a PDA / WAP security scan. It features full scans of all
65,535 ports and user input scans that allow a visitor to test
only the ports he/she needs. There have been countless browser
vulnerabilities in both code and browser misconfiguration. Rather
than test for every possible vulnerability, the Privacy Section
attempts to test for top-level vulnerabilities. The site has been
designed to do speedy scans, which could lead to false readings,
especially those on a slower connection. Reduce the errors by
performing multiple scans and comparing results. The reading room
offers more information and after performing a test, the results
provide links to where you can read more about certain
vulnerabilities. It's set up to be easy to use and has features
for advanced users.
TEST THOSE BIG NEW DRIVES!!! http://www.nu2.nu/bst/
Bst5 runs on Windows 95, 98 ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or the
Windows Preinstalled Environment (booted from CD-Rom) or the
ERD Commander 2002 (booted from CD-Rom).
The program author says:
I've written a program called Bart's Stuff Test v5
(bst5). It's a small win32 application for heavily stress
testing storage devices. Bst5 supports testing at file and
device level.
File level support enables you to test any local or remote
volume by file access. This makes it possible to test almost
any storage device. As long as the operating system can write
or read files from it, you can use bst5 to test it. In bst5
this is seen as a "high" level test, you write/read data
to/from a file using the file system support from your
operating system.
This could be a good tool for a number of uses. One that immediately
comes to mind is for stress-testing one of today's huge, hard-to-back-up
hard drives before it's put into full-time use. While the drive is new,
under full warranty, and not yet full of vital data, you could use
Bart's tool to exercise it thoroughly and to ensure that it has no
factory defects.

Jv16 PowerTools http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/jv16powertools.shtml
Perhaps the best ever Windows Registry maintenance tool. It's

long ago
--Modify and remove unneeded shell extensions
--Remove file types
--Uninstall or remove software from the Windows' Add/Remove software
list
--Add or remove programs which automatically start with Windows
--Scan the registry for invalid entries

--Find and replace text within text files
--Combine files
--Encrypt files with Twofish, Blowfish, Rijndael, Skipjack, or Square
encryption algorithms
--Securely wipe your sensitive data so it can never be restored
--Automatic backup feature
The Temp File Tool
--Define folders which you can later clean with just a one click
--Or make your computer automatically flush those temp dirs
--Find temp files which haven't been used for a few days
--You can remove the files in a normal way, move them to the
recycle bin or securely wipe them so they cannot be restored
The Console
--One of the most powerful command interpreters available for Windows
today
--List of features is too long to list, there are well over 200 features
--Built-in documentation (Man and Syntax commands)

Better Ad Blocking for Mozilla and Netscape 7
http://www.floppymoose.com/
{Smash 'em ads!} Use Mozilla and Netscape 7 CSS3 selectors to
block ads based on substring matches in the HREF of a link for
links containing images. Apparently, it's more reliable to
matching the HREF link than the IMG SRC link. The Web page gives
instructions for accomplishing this through a newly-created file
called userContent.css and copy the code from the page into this
text-based file. After placing the file in the appropriate
location, restart the browser to pick up the styles and go surfing
to see ad images become invisible while other legitimate images
remain.

StripFile W98/2k/XP FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106200
StripFile is a tool for reducing the size of HTML and image (GIF,
JPEG, PNG) files. It allows you to remove redundant information
from those files, thereby reducing the size in some cases by up to
50% or more (depending on file type). StripFile only removes
embedded data from image files; it does not alter the actual
images. The program can process selected files or entire folders
(with subfolders) and process images and HTML files at the same
time, allowing Webmasters to optimize their entire site in a
single run. The results vary strongly and depend on the files that
are processed; HTML files with many comments and spaces usually
produce much greater savings then most images. The program is easy
to use and also integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click
menu.

{Integrated development environment} Dev-PHP is a full-featured,
integrated
development environment (IDE) that uses PHP scripting language and the
PHP-
GTK library (both included in the "PHP Package file") to create scripts
and
applications. If you want to develop Web sites using PHP, this is one
way to
do it. If you already have PHP scripting language installed, then just
download Dev-PHP IDE. To get started with PHP, go to the official site
at
php.net. It has all the basic editor options including "Open files"
tabs,
drag and drop functionality, syntax highlighting, customization,
templates,
Web page icons, code optimization, and syntax checking. Though the
README
file suggests reading the documentation for more information, there is
little documentation on using the program.
