Outlet Shopping
OK so anyone with half a brain knows that most of the so called
'Outlet Malls'
are just plain phoney. They sell mostly stuff made specifically for
these 'outlets'.
And it is almost always below the quality of the stuf in their main
stores.
And they really don't have all that great of prices (unless you shop
only at the
hoity toity places).
There are some real outlets out there. One of my favorites was Sears
when it
was in this area. To find out where they all are now, go here and do a search.

Retroactive Sales:
Most retailers do this even thought they don;t all announce it;
If you buy something then it goes on sale, many will adjust your cost.
So watch the fliers and ask.
Refurbed $$$
It really puzzles me, but some folks will not buy refurbed products.
You get the SAME warranty and spend way less on the item.
I figure, they have had 2 shots at making this thing work right *IF*
it was ever wrong in the first place. Plus they send me another if
it does not work for me. I have had great luck with refurbs, and saved
lots!

Console
W2k/XP FREE
http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/
{Windows console} Windows console is exactly what its name
implies: it enhances the Windows console including fonts, colors,
size, transparency, and background. It uses command line for
making changes. Those who are somewhat familiar with command line
programs may learn from using this one while spiffing up the shell
screen (it is not a shell, however) that you typically can get to
by clicking Start | Run, and typing "cmd." The default console
options add a dark transparent window, which was a cool change
from the usual black and white window. You can ask questions in
the forums to get help.
Password Manager W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.geocities.com/ramix_info/passwordmanager.html
{Dealing with a necessary evil} No doubt, most of you are sick of
passwords and having to create a new one for every site that
captures your interest. However, we know it's a fact of e-life,
and unsafe to use the same password for everything. Password
Manager is a Java-based program with a built-in optional random
password generator to take the pain out of thinking of yet another
password. Features include backing up, searching records,
importing and exporting records, sorting records, grouping
records, locking files, and encrypting with BlowfishJ algorithm. A
nice trait is the ability to click on an entry and go to its Web
site. To get from installation to adding entries took little time
and no help.

Upromise http://www.upromise.com/
{Save for college} Many programs have popped
up to help families start saving, and Upromise is an option. It
looks overwhelming at first, but put it in the perspective that it
works like those programs where the more you buy, the more points
you earn. For instance, I have a credit card that can earn up to
$5,000 to use toward a car purchase from a specific company. When
I go buy the car, $5,000 comes off the price ticket. Upromise
works in a similar way. You may already be shopping or using
services that are eligible for earning points. It's free. The
catch? You give them your credit card and grocery card numbers and
they'll know your shopping habits. You're allowed not to enter the
cards at all. They're NOT charging anything; it's so that each
time you make a purchase at a Upromise retailer with the cards,
you get your points.

Hardware-Created ASF Files Stop Playing in Media Player 9 Series
W98/2k/XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q816044
{Fix} When trying to play back certain ASF files created by
hardware devices, the following error message may appear
approximately three or four minutes after playback has started:
"0xC00D1199 -- Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file
is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you
are trying to play." This error may appear when seeking past the
three- or four- minute mark by using the track bar. When
applications built on the Windows Media Format play back files,
the applications make certain checks to determine if a packet is
valid. The Windows Media Format incorrectly handles a case where
the time wraps around because of the maximum value possible for
numeric data types. To resolve the problem, contact Microsoft
Product Support Services.

Advanced Anti Keylogger W2k/XP
FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106574
Advanced Anti Keylogger is a powerful but easy-to-use anti-spy
software to prohibit and control operation of any keylogger tool.
It does not rely on a spyware database or requires updates, but
rather intercepts any attempt to intercept or hook keyword
activity. Since many programs use these techniques for perfectly
legitimate functions (hotkeys, keyboard shortcuts, etc.) it offers
a rule-based mode, that works similar to a firewall for your
keyboard by prompting you each time a hook is detected; you have
then the option to allow or deny the action. A built-in rules
manager allows you to view the list of allowed or blocked
applications, and change status for each. You can optionally run
the program in a high-security mode, which will block all keyboard
interception, good or bad.

Inzider W9x/2k/XP
FREE
http://www.ntsecurity.nu/toolbox/inzider/
Inzider lists processes in the Win system and listening ports. Useful
for
finding culprit application that is holding a listening port hostage.
Inzider may help in identifying less advanced Trojans that are
floating around. Note: there are stability problems and the
program isn't perfect. On Windows NT/2000/XP, Inzider can't check
processes started as services. Download and install the program as
usual. After installing, run the program from the Start menu. It
will take a few moments, and then a list of processes and related
ports appears. It's possible some processes aren't listed. In this
case, exit and restart the program until all processes appear in
the list - typically two to three tries.

Shell Object Editor
W2k/XP FREE
http://www.tropictech.de/software/shellobject/
{Create shell objects} The utility is - obviously - an editor for
shell objects. Shell objects are shortcuts to folders or programs
created by the system. In other words, they don't have the little
arrow in the lower left-hand corner of the folder or file icon.
For instance, I have a shortcut to my camera using a 2D camera
icon. Using the wizard in Shell Object Editor, I replaced it with
a prettier 3D camera icon. You can't delete system or program
shell objects unless you switch to "expert mode."
