and Quote-a-Matic
http://www.sbrowning.com/
{Who said, what, when} Travel
to the past through the WhoWhatWhen
timeline and read quotes. The
graphics timelines go from 1000 A.D.
to present day, describing the time period and the people who
lived during those times. James Earl Jones is the lucky star. The
first timeline shows his timeline at the top with other
celebrities beneath. Pick another "World of" (crime, religion,
sports, etc.) and Mr. Jones stays in place while the names and
timelines change around him. Clicking on another name opens a new
window with a Google search on that person. It has very cool and
dynamic timelines. Search quotes by topic or person for
inspiration, laughter, or information. The site runs into errors
at times; just keep trying and it'll serve you what you want.

TrekEarth
http://www.trekearth.com/
{The world through photography} Go on a trek around the world via
the 14,000+ photos on this site. It's cheaper than buying an
airplane ticket and paying for a hotel. Wow, the photo
(http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Middle_East/Iran/East/Fars/photo7224.htm)
of a mosque is spectacular. Each photo comes with photo
information, including who took it and when, genre, the camera
used, and points scored. Below the information is the critique
where the photo gets points and a summary of the critique. Critics
with a gold and silver star have been highly rated, which is
similar to Amazon's votes on reviews (useful vs. not useful). Also
adding to this community are forums where people discuss photos,
countries, and other topics. Since this is about photos from
around the world, it is appropriate that it has multilingual
capabilities. Go into the gallery to view categories, themes,
travelogues, workshops, and statistics. Get ready to have your
breath taken away.

{Crunch numbers for names} Whenever I meet a new baby or someone
with a unique name, I often ask for the story behind their names

female, and last name. The home page gives the lowdown of the most
common names along with the top baby names for 2002.
FutureMe
http://www.futureme.org/
Most of us had to write letters to ourselves
to be opened at a later date. I didn't get to do it, but my 9th
grade Sunday school class wrote letters to themselves in 5th grade
and opened them in 9th grade. I did write something when I went
through a two-year leadership program, but haven't gotten it back
yet. This site is simple. Write a letter to yourself to be e-
mailed to you on the date of your choice. No, they're not doing it
to collect and harvest your e-mail address. Of course, you may
wonder if your e-mail address will still be valid.
City Creator
http://www.citycreator.com/
{Build your own city} This cool Flash-based Web site allows you to
build your dream city like in the SimCity game, only you are not
racing to build a population and keep it thriving. Those living in
hot places needing relief can build a "snoland" complete with
igloos, snow-topped roofs, skiers, skiers who crashed, snow-
covered trees, and the snowy landscape of your choice. Just drag
and drop items into the city. You can also build a typical city
with no snow, or even one with castles to take you back to the
times of Camelot. Suggested: Greece, Wild West, Russia,
and Venice with gondolas, Atlantis, and Egypt.

Here are some suggestions vital to good XP/Win2000 performance.
1. Always disable the Indexing service. This service is the
equivalent of the hated Find Fast program installed by
previous editions of Microsoft Office. It consumes incredible
amounts of system resources and is basically useless.
2. Get Mike Lin's great free startup control panel at
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
This little tool is a
control panel applet that allows you to see all the programs
that start with the system. You will often be surprised how
many useless and resource consuming programs there are. If you
are in doubt what a program is and does and whether it is
something useful that you need, the program allows you to
disable it and test the result at your next boot. (Mike Lin
also has a great Startup Monitor that asks you each time some
program tries to add itself to the programs that start with
the system - http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
)
3. Bootvis is a free Microsoft tool (only for XP) to monitor
what happens when the system starts. It also has an
optimization function that places all the programs that need
to start with the system at the "front" of the harddisk, thus
speeding boot performance. Get it at
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.mspx
4. Pagedefrag is a great free tool available here
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtml
It defragments your pagefile (swapfile) and your registry
files every time you boot. This greatly improves system
performance.
5. Regularly use the free Lite version of the ultimate
Defragmentation tool Diskeeper.
http://www1.execsoft.com/dklite.exe
This is a much improved
version of the built-in defragmentation utility in Win2000 and
XP - developed by the same company.
Following the above suggestions will greatly improve your
system performance.

Anyone notice a huge file called "System Volume Information" you
can't
get rid of ?
"Maximizing System Restore In WinME and WinXP"
http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20020711S0009
will help
You can even turn off System Restore completely, which drives this
folder
down to the smallest possible size. It doesn't make sense to remove the
SVI
folder directly because (1) the OS will fight you and (2) if System
Restore is
still running, the folder will simply come back, & get just as big
as before.
But by controlling it you can manage the size.

work with Outlook Express. The program also provides you with the

candidate for a computer technician's utility CD. It may not be a
flashy program, but it gets the job done with system monitors such

much RAM your system is using. There are
also monitors for the size of your hard disk, page file, swap

MS Manual of Style for Tech Pubs W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=44354
Although the Manual of Style
for Technical Publications file was meant as a guideline
to be
used by Microsoft employees (for writing standard technical
documents such as
the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles), it is
still a great outline and resource for
non-Microsoft technical
writers. Microsoft is known for writing great technical articles,
so why shouldn't we have access to the standards by which they
write their articles?
there are even tips for
the right use of "can" versus "may." If you are a technical writer
or just want to write a great technical paper, then this Manual of
Style for Technical
Publications file is a wonderful resource for
you.

help reduce spam by converting your posted e-mail address to a

to extract the address from the link. No coding required, just
enter your e-mail, preview the result and copy/paste the code into
your pages.

Web Notepad
W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.digicraft.com.au/webnotepad/
Hand coders who don't like to
use WYSIWYGs when writing HTML will like this one, since it color
codes the code and has FTP built-in for uploading the files to the
server. It comes with tabs so you can have multiple documents
loaded and switch between them by clicking on the tabs. It had no
problems opening ASP, JSP, PHP, CSS, and TXT files. My only
complaint is it doesn't wrap long lines of text; at least, not
that I could find. Nifty program.

package under TrID, because it contains the file type definitions
and a scan for creating your own definitions to share with others.

based. Copy the TrID_Net.exe into the folder where the TrID files
reside and run it. First, browse to the folder where all the .xml
files that came with TrID_32.zip (file definitions) are located to
add them to the program. You're set! Now load any file with an
extension of interest and watch what happens as it identifies it.
If it doesn't recognize the file type, then help add the
definition by using the tridscan.exe file. TrIDNet is extensible,
so it can add new file types. The utility requires the .NET
Framework.

routers or servers on a network or the Internet. All you do is
click on the button with >> to enter up to ten IP addresses,
check
the boxes of the devices to monitor, and set the refresh rate in
minutes. The box has ten LED lights that are black when first
running it. If a network device is on, its LED is green, otherwise
it'll be red or black. This is useful for small business or a home
network so you know which machines are running.

BuzzPhraser

A hard drive can be called a "data management solution"
or a cell phone
could be called a "wireless small network communications system."
You
tell it how many nouns, suffixes, adnouns, adjectives, adverbs, &
prefixes
to use
and then just click the "New BuzzPhrase" button.
It may not be
an actual "device," but it still sounds pretty impressive.
